How can you use your network to get the job you want?

Leverage your network by reaching out for informational interviews with people in your target industry to gain insights and build connections. Let your existing network—friends, family, former colleagues—know you're job hunting, as they may offer leads or make introductions. Engage actively on platforms like LinkedIn to stay visible, and ask for referrals from contacts at your desired companies. Attend networking events to meet professionals who can connect you to opportunities. Always offer value to your network and maintain relationships by following up regularly to keep the door open for potential job leads.

I would add that before you start reaching out to people, you even need to know what you're looking for so that you can assess who are the best people for you to reach out to! When you've been working for some years, your network starts to be vast: you will know people within your specific field, others within your industry doing different roles, work colleagues that work in areas that your work interacts slightly with, past managers, etc. With time, all of these contacts have followed their own career journey: some are still working in the same place as when you met them, others moved companies, others changed careers, etc. So, for you to know who best is out there that can help you, first you need to know what type of support you need.

Here are results of my brainstorming of some ways to stay in touch with your important career contacts: 1. Re-post a useful update on new app they might use if they knew about it. 2. Sometimes I share a newer MeetUp group that just started they may want to join. 3. Quote a positive, uplifting phrase that they might use to motivate themselves or staff. 4. Share a news factoid that is interesting- like How to Say Hello in 100 Languages. 5. Change the phrase or quote under your signature often to add interest and be memorable. 6. Add jokes- A current corny favorite>> What do you call a potato with glasses? A spec-tater.

Before leveraging your network for job opportunities, you must be very clear about who you ARE. Know exactly who you are, what you want to do, who you want to serve in the marketplace and the value you bring to them. If you can't confidently convey this information about yourself, then you will project that to your network... and people will not feel comfortable going to bat for you. A saying goes, "A confused customer will never buy." Well, a Tier 2 or 3 networking contact who doesn't "get" who you are (because you don't get who you are or know what you want) will not put their reputation behind your name.

Networking proves to be a potent tool for improving your job prospects, often working through indirect channels like advice, referrals, and providing value. Instead of solely focusing on the ultimate job as your goal, view each interaction as a step toward a clear objective. Approach it step by step, acknowledging that the journey unfolds gradually.

Sempre indico ou eu mesma faço pesquisas de possíveis empresas para se trabalhar dentro do perfil do cliente. A busca por emprego não pode ser apenas pautada em dinheiro, trago para o cliente a consciência de que a empresa empregadora precisa cultivar os mesmo valores e objetivos para que seja uma união frutífera para ambos.

When I spotted a dream job posting, I reached out to a LinkedIn connection working in the company. Their guidance and internal referral not only secured me an interview but also exemplified the potency of a well-nurtured network. The job wasn't just a professional fit; it was a testament to the strength of connections forged through intentional networking efforts.

Along with reaching out to existing people in your network, LinkedIn is a great place to expand your network. Searching LinkedIn for recruiters in your industry with the various qualifications you're looking for in your next job (such as the type of job, industry, and location you're looking for) and connecting can lead to new opportunities. Along with the connection requests, for engineers for example, include a message like' "I'm an engineer looking for my next career opportunity and thought I'd reach out to network." For those recruiters that accept the connection, reach out with a message to provide more information on what you're looking for and if they have any similar opportunities that they are recruiting for.

I would advise against "using" your network to get a job. Rather, focus on building relationships with members of your network over time, both when you are and aren't on the job market. People know when they are simply being used and will be less likely to advocate for you if they don't feel that your interest in them is selfless and genuine.

One mistake we make with networking is just connecting and not cultivating genuine relationships. In truth, when you have built a solid relationship with someone, when opportunities arise, you are fresh on their thoughts on whom to immediately recommend. However, to get to that point, you should engage authentically, offer value, seek advice, and nurture relationships into invaluable alliances. This will unlock doors and opportunities for you.

What I learned this year about networking is to focus on quality versus quantity. Meeting too many connections can lead to surface level, superficial exchanges with others. It can lead to a lot of clutter in your network. Aim to make genuine, authentic connections with a few or limited amount of like-minded professionals who can support your long-term professional growth. You want to surround yourself with people who want you to win.

The strategy you'll employ in your resume will change over time. It'll need to focus on the key skills and experiences that make you marketable for where you want to take your career next.

You have more of a network than you realize. The number of clients that say they don't know how to network or don't now where to begin, YOU CAN DO IT! Start by thinking about past coworkers, people from college, family friends, ANYONE that actually knows you. Start with people that aren't intimidating, but thoughtful, kind, supportive, and knowledgeable. And just ask to catch up and if you can pick their brain for some ideas. It is the simple to get started!

I also think not only identifying your goals, but make sure people know about them. Your network should be aware - to the extent that makes sense for each individual - what your goals and dreams are. Even if something seems unattainable at the time, sharing it with others can create important opportunities to discuss and calibrate. People can't help you if they don't know what you are looking for.

I would suggest leveraging your connections, and not exploiting them. -Ask for informational interviews, not job handouts. -Be helpful, supportive, and genuine. Your network is a safety net you weave yourself, one thread of kindness at a time. These threads of kindness weave a strong safety net that catches you during unexpected falls, helps you land that dream job, and offers a springboard for future opportunities. So again, leverage your connections and don't exploit them!

Connection is crucial! Amid the pandemic, layoffs hit nearly every industry. Yet, in my network, I witnessed a collective effort where people came together to provide job opportunities, references, and any assistance they could to job seekers. By building and nurturing these connections, you never know when you might be able to assist someone or when someone in your network can lend a hand to you.

By helping no matter what is you situation ! If it works for the individual, who knows when the elevator ever comes back if it does. Don't expect an elevator return but people, usually, remind a helping hand.
