How do you become an airframe and powerplant mechanic?

There are several ways you can become a mechanic. The Shortest way would be to attend & complete a basic course in an approved Part 147 school and gain practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft. Please refer to commisison regulation 1321/2014. Annex III 66.A.25 (Basic knowledge requirements) & 66.A.30 (Basic experience requirements).

To start with, there are two ways to get the training which leads to successful end of granting the license of FAA, EASA, and or any other NAA based on meeting the following options l: 1- is by attending the training for 2 years at approved 147 or part 66 school as airframe and power plant for FAA license, or as B1 or B2 for the EASA license. The training covers Theory of 2000 hrs and covers the practical training at shops for almost same hours. Completing the training will grant you the green light to start working as a fitter. 2- Other way is by only attending the exams and pass all modules without going for a training school. In this case the on hand experience must be a minimum of 5 years to be enable to get the license issued.

One other way is through Apprenticeships. Unfortunately in underdeveloped and developing countries, this isn't readily available, but is definitely one of the best ways forward in obtaining an Airframe and Powerplant certification.

There is a technician in the shop where I work who took vocational courses in his public high school that translate directly into the educational requirements for becoming a full-fledged A&P mechanic. He is fortunate indeed to start on such a career path at such a young age. His education was paid for (except for his FAA exams), and he was able to step right into a real job. And he will never know what it's like to stand in an unemployment line.

For me i was retired military veteran and worked in military aviation. So i was able to use this as experience. Then i needed a letter from a licensed a and p mechanic. Then presented myself at faa office to apply to write my license. Once you pass 3 exams and do successful practical 2 day test by faa examiner . You would be awarded an a and p mechanic license.

In other countries, after you perform the exams, and pass, you will get a temporary licence, but not valid for services release. Just after a few years hangar practice, you will get the formal and complete approval & licence to release services.

Many apprenticeships will structure training ing to obtain Licences. Modules will re visit those mathematics and science subjects learnt at school or college.

In the UK and Europe you will need to complete the Part 66 modules for the licence type and then a period of experience before completing a type course and gaining certification rights. You can have a licence at 18 but cannot certify until you're 21. An approved B1.1 course is a minimum of 2400 hours then 2 years experience. Type course vary but a lot are around the 5-6 weeks mark. So from starting training to certifying is a minimum of 5 years and normally around 7-9 (in the UK).

All you really need to be a good B1 or B2 engineer is a reasonably good combination of hand skills and theoretical knowledge. Most importantly you must be able to understand the concept that this is a safety critical industry, understand and follow safety principles over everything.
