How do you become an environmental engineer?

The carrier development must likely take the engineer to the sustainability field were social, economic, corporate governance and environmental issues merge. The environmental engineers that I like the most are those that start with an engineering carrer/studies in civil, mechanical, chemical, agriculture, industrial. From there an MS in environmental engineering will provide a solid foundation, and specializing in air, water, soil or solid waste (hazardous and normal). Permitting, follow-up, pollution control equipment design, etc. will be part of the job depending upon the carrer path

My dissertation concerned the development and the implementation of a multicriteria decision-making tool for evaluating the perspectives of material and energy recovery from the treatment of municipal solid waste in Greece in the frame of circular economy. I gave courses in treatment and management of solid waste and have worked with professionals in the field through networking events, conferences, and online platforms. I keep abreast of the emerging technologies and sustainable practices and stay informed about environmental regulations and policies. I participate in environmental projects, either through academic programs, internships, or personal initiatives. I join the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (HSWMA).

Environmental engineering is basically an interdisciplinary program that applies engineering principles, chemistry, microbiology and hydrogeollogy in solving environmental problems. When you want to work in companies, environment engineers are often hired in EHS (environment, health, and safety) fields. For this job, you are required to learn skills about; - Analyzing to develop and implement strategies, processes, and procedures to achieve EHS goals and program objectives. - Communicating internal stakeholders to ensure that EHS policies are communicated, implemented, and enforced among employees, vendors. - Design injury/illness and accident management processes - Research specific strategies from risk assessment of the existing portfolio to identify sources of risk and develop remediation and mitigation plans

I can add problem solving skills as well. For example when they work as an environmental inspector they must communicate with field workers and project staff including engineers and field superintendent.They must monitor daily activities and make sure they adherence with environmental management plan and any non conformity must be communicated with project team. In case of any technical disagreement or confilicts they must be skilled to resolve the problem with a correct strategy including problem identifying, root cause analysis, alternative solutions and more.

To become an environmental engineer, you first need to get a good education. On the eve of our education, we need to get information from many additional literature and resources. Of course, choosing the right job after graduation is very important. An environmental specialist must first of all be able to do field work and actively participate in many environmental monitoring activities. We can become good professionals by loving our work and doing it conscientiously. Every business affair will play a big role in your career. We must love the environment!

Environmental Engineering also focuses on contaminated land related works including soil and groundwater remediation. Impacts to the soil and groundwater are extensive due to illegal practices and lesser stringent environmental norms. Soil is crucial for us to survive and groundwater is a source of water and impacts to these heavily disrupts basic needs of life. A career can also be developed in this which will involve all aspects of an environmental project life cycle and designing a technique that would remediate soil and groundwater. In recent years, I often see people started their careers as Climate Change analyst, and then jumped into consulting, international organizations, NGOs, etc. in order to create more impacts. For personal example; I worked as an environmental engineer in a beverage company. And then I got an MBA and changed my role as a management consultant in climate change fields, which allowed me to broaden my perspective as well as advancing my career.

Develop good relationships with your line/field workers. They have experience with many of the systems you will be dealing with and can teach you many things. Step outside of your point of view and try to understand the concerns of others.

It takes team working, problem solving and communication skills to be successful in this field. In one of my projects I was working on contamination release modeling from burning stak flares in a refinery. As an environmental engineer I collaborated with process engineering sector in order to acquire required pure oil composition datas. I also visited project field and communicated with field staff. I presented modeling process to the environmental and process engineering field. I also learned how to use a software to perform contaminant release modeling while using chemical engineering databases.This is the example of an interdisciplinary work and being open to learn new technology to perform a quality work.

As important as developing knowledge through a solid educational base is the development of interpersonal, relationship, commercial, negotiation and networking skills, which greatly expands the possibilities for professionals with a degree in Environmental Engineering.
