How do you create suspense and tension in your video story?

You can also play with what you let the audience know vs what the character(s) know(s), the definition itself of suspense! (Ex : we know there’s a bomb in the room but the character doesn’t know)

Filmmaking is about showing what is seen and even the unseen. We highlight what's necessary for the story to progress but add subtext to the story that when viewers look back, realise there have been hints all along. A knife on the table hidden in the shadows while people are speaking in the light, a doll resting on the bed beside a rocking chair as 2 people have a conversation. You need to introduce the content before it happens without bringing attention to it. Or maybe you want to bring attention to it. It all depends on the story.

Many people feel discomfort when faced with events they can't understand. 2 simple tip for me to check on invoking immersion on video storytelling. First, Close your eyes and listen to the audio or VO. If you can imagine and feel the beats/music plus tone of the VO, then it involves you to be part of the video. Second, I mute the audio and rely on visual cues and cuts making sure that even its incomplete you could still understand the narrative and cues through the composition of video. This is a play on your senses. A fun and challenging tip to tinker your video storytelling.

First of all I understand the whole story and my target audience. What is the theme of the video? Where shots are on peak and making more intensity just mark them. Using best suspense background music not only one music but use multiple according to the scenes. Use sfx, sfx are very best thing to give a scenes more intensity and feel so use best sfx according to the video and theme. Use transitions, other vfx and stuff to make it more suspense.

Perhaps the best advice I ever received was to decide what your story is all about. Then you ask yourself, “What type of suspense, emotion, and tension would enhance this story?” Everything is decided at the outset. Then as you write your screenplay, you’ll be asking the same question with every scene you write. The story itself will guide you. Trust your writing/storytelling instincts. The more you write, the stronger your instincts become.

Suspense is depends on the slow shots and the music. You need to combine slow movement moving forward shots with suspenseful music, it creates a feel of tension in the audience mind.

Sometimes there is no need to rediscover America. We all know the term Hitchcock suspens in the history of cinema. Alfred Hitchcock creates a narrative that the audience knows whats gona happen but the actors in the story does not. Even though we know what the protogonist will do next, we still watch with curiosity. We can apply the Hitchcock method to create this feeling of suspension to our stories and we do this with editing.
