When specific requirements like flexibility or enhanced strength are necessary, I start by printing prototypes in PLA. This allows for design validation without incurring the higher costs associated with specialized materials. Once the design is verified, I switch to materials like TPU or PETG carbon fiber for the final print. This strategic approach not only ensures efficient use of resources but also supports innovation and high-quality outcomes, demonstrating a commitment to both creativity and fiscal responsibility in engineering projects.

The choice of material in 3D printing influences expenses. For prototypes or non-functional objects, choose less expensive filaments like PETG or PLA since they are simple to print and produce less waste. Standardize the filament diameter to 2.85mm or 1.75mm to save money when purchasing in bulk.

When creating your own models for 3D printing, try to reduce the amount of required supports as much as possible. One way is to put 45° chamfers under flat overhangs so that you don't need supports for that spot. Also, tailor the amount of perimeters, infill type/percentage, etc to suit both the part being made and material being used. If the printer is capable, using a dedicated support material may also be beneficial (supports using the primary material are difficult to remove, the primary material is expensive, etc). Make use of non-3D printed parts to enhance your designs. For example, print-in-place hinges are cool but can be bulky or weak, however, using a small metal rod for a pin hinge in the part can be slimmer and stronger.

Try to tune in print settings for each material, I have heard of people tuning in each color of a material but I think that is a little excessive if you are just a hobbyist. Also, ensure the printer itself is properly setup as well. Some things to check include: testing the e-steps of the extruder to make sure the correct amount of filament is being fed to the machine, making sure the belts are properly tightened, the bed is level (and the auto bed leveling mesh has been updated), the hot end and bed are PID tuned and are staying consistent at the desired temperature.

Several places sell transition rolls (the first that comes to mind is Printed Solid). These are rolls of filament from when they are changing the color of the filament they are making and are significantly cheaper than normal rolls. If you do not care about the color of the print, these rolls work perfectly for prototyping parts.
