How do you refine your video scripts before shooting?

in purpose of a shooting video or film script. the shooting script, is the first , key piece in the production of a motion picture, as i know and we learned at film school, also It’s a version of a screenplay that includes detailed cinematography instructions laid out in the order that they’ll be needed, such as certain camera shots, props, and locations. A shooting script is like a combination of a screenplay and a shot list. for sure and no doubt that will really helps after in postproduction not only in editing but also to follow the leads of the script or director.

Table Read: Gather your team and read the script out loud. This can help catch awkward dialogue or pacing issues that are not always evident when reading silently. Planning, planning, planning before shooting. Talk to your team. Draw-out their ideas. It is always good to exhaust possibilities during pre-production, than exhaust yourself in post. Visualize the whole film in the movie screen inside your head before you touch the camera.

I love and recommend a video outline of what you need to capture, both visually and audibly. We use a repeated process to first get clarity on exactly who the audience is, what issue in their world the video will address, and how the brand producing the video helps address the issue. I HIGHLY recommend not having people memorize lines unless they are skilled actors. Only the very best actors can pull this off and make it look authentic. By having the content outline, you can guide the interviewee to the audio content you need for an authentic story that passes the viewer's "authenticity sniff test."

Reading it out aloud also lets you time the script. It is amazing how duration is underestimated by just sight reading! And in today’s world of short concentration spans, duration is king! Fortunately, I began my TV career in commercials, so I know the amazing amount you can communicate in just 30 seconds. But when I started in corporate production, we regularly made films of 12-15 minutes. Now it’s a 2-3 minute sprint! However, I always maintain that if a comms or training video is part of a course and the viewer is being paid to watch it or needs to watch it, that durations can be longer. We are making a set of five best practice films for paediatric trainees and the target durations are 8-9 minutes. So short is not always best!

For all short corporate films you should aim at having 1 core message. You can have supporting messages that focus and strengthen the single core message but never 2 or more core messages, they will fight each other for attention. If you have 2 core messages you need to make 2 films.

Unnecessary or redundant words, sentences, or scenes can be distracting, dilute your message, and escalate production time and costs. When evaluating your content, consider these questions: Does this element align with the video's primary goal or theme? Does it advance the storyline or unveil vital information? Does it captivate and engage the audience? If not, it's likely best to remove or replace it with more pertinent and concise content, ensuring your message remains clear and impactful while keeping within the 750-character limit.

If the videos are for social media, sometimes keeping filler words and mistakes can make the video feel more authentic and less robotic. Comedians are masters of public speaking and many continue to use filler words, so they can serve a niche purpose when used well.

Interestingly, simply sharing your script for feedback sparks a new level of self-review, as you begin to anticipate the reader’s perspective. Even without extensive comments, the act of exposure itself can be a great catalyst for improvement. It's definitely worth trying.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to refine your script is to read it aloud, either by yourself or with someone else. Reading aloud helps you identify awkward phrasing, grammatical errors, and logical gaps that might not be obvious on paper.

A great way to get feedback is to record yourself. That way you can review your script on your own and also share it with others to get additional feedback.

Get feedback from your enemies, or just people who will say, "this sucks" to your face. Although it may be tough, it's the way we learn, and the way we grow.

Always show your script to people who are - Better Videographers than you - Common people who don't have much knowledge of videography. This will help you get the perspective of both viewers and videomakers and will bring out the best output.

Do an early rehearsal if what you want to convey with your script relies on technical assistance such as camera work, lighting, timing, etc. That way, you could identify the flaws and make necessary adjustments early to ensure the production runs as smooth as possible.

This step is crucial to ensure that the script sounds like something the spokesperson or actor would actually say. It also gives you a chance as the video editor to hear it in their tone and inflection and make final adjustments before recording.

Do a rehearsal preparation on your mind considering how you want things to go. If you find any inconsistencies, you can make adjustments to script to make it more feasible. Finally do it in a more practical setup and make final adjustments. Keep an eye on the video angle, lighting quality, audio quality etc.

We do a dry run of the script with the actors and see how it flows with them. And make changes where necessary, before we begin shooting.

Make an AV board. Combining the script with actual visuals that you want would be helpful. It makes sure that your shot list goes hand in hand with the dialogue. Be it a VO script or just a structural script for a video that needs to be posted on social media. By doing so you know exactly what to shoot and where to put it. Of course when you start editing, this order may vary but at least you have a great foundation to build upon.

If your script has dialogue, rehearse it with someone and see how natural it sounds... Or even better have someone rehearse it in front of you and listen to it... There is nothing worse in a dialogue driven script than in-authentic dialogue that just sounds like audible print... The best way to hear the authenticity is to have it performed and listen to it... You can hear very quickly if the tone, beats, language or sentence structure is off and you can then workshop with the talent how to improve the dialogue.

Whenever possible stick to recommended word counts for specific durations (e.g. 75 to 85 words for a 30 second spot). Can you exceed the recommendations? Yes. Should you? Probably not, you're straining both your on-camera or VO talent as well as the viewer into delivering and understanding a faster read. This is often counterproductive.

A script should lead the viewer to the next thought without repeating the same thought. Don’t do this: The script- “John Smith was more than excited about the upcoming election” John Smith sound bite “I am more than excited about the upcoming election” The words of a script should add to the story without repeating anything unless that is to clarify a point.

Write in specific audio cues, ambient sounds, and music transitions that align with the story.
