How does psychology influence successful product designs?

Observing what people do and their actions objectively tends to be a way more accurate tool thank asking. People don’t tend to know their own behavior well or speak to it accurately. I believe Liz Sanders is an expert here. The Gillette Razor case study is a phenomenal example. How many strokes does it take you to shave?

To fully understand a user they must be observed (through interviews, surveys, observations, and testing...) and to observe you influence those being observed. I remember a case study where a group installed a playground that was linked up to a pump that supplied water to a village. When observed the children happily pushed the merry-go-round but when the cameras and people had left it was discovered that the children were forced to cruelly 'play' so the village could have water. User research must be fully immersive using anthropological tools and practices

Nehmen wir als Beispiel Farben. Es wurde mittlerweile nachgewiesen, dass Farben eine Wirkung auf unser Unterbewusstsein haben. Jede Farbe aktiviert spezifische Neuronen im Gehirn, die bei jedem Menschen mit individuellen Assoziationen verbunden sind. Die hervorgerufenen Assoziationen einer Farbe werden natürlich vor allem durch die persönliche Historie geprägt. Dennoch können bestimmte Farben Emotionen auslösen und uns ein Gefühl der Zufriedenheit und des Glücks vermitteln.

Eine Sache die ich erstaunlich fand, ist das die Designs, die am meisten Erfolg haben, sprechen unser emotionales Unterbewusstsein an und vermitteln uns ein angenehmes Gefühl, selbst wenn wir nicht genau erklären können, warum. Das hat mit den Sinnen zu tun. Und dadurch könnte es sogar sein, dass du nicht bewusst bemerkst, wie diese Produkte und ihre Designs dir positive Emotionen vermitteln. Dennoch ziehen sie dich immer wieder an, denn jede Interaktion mit ihnen ist eine positive Erfahrung. Wenn die emotionale Ebene der Benutzer nicht angesprochen wird, erreicht man die Benutzer nicht – so einfach ist es und doch so kompliziert.

Es ist sehr spannend, auch im Bereich Kommunikation zu sehen, wie das Verhalten und die sozialen Einflüsse auf jeden einzelnen von uns wirken. Wie unsere Wahrnehmungen beeinflusst werden. Da stellen sich mir folgende Fragen: Welchen Einfluss hat beispielsweise Stimmung auf unser Denken und das Denken auf unsere Stimmung? Wie wirkt sich physische Distanz zu Situationen auf die Erinnerung aus? Wie in den letzten Jahren erlebt? Welche Konsequenzen haben ein hoher oder niedriger Selbstwert?

In industrial design, contextual inquiry, a key element of ethnographic research, is crucial. It uncovers real user behaviors and environments, guiding designs that resonate deeply with users' actual needs and contexts. This approach leads to more intuitive, user-friendly products, enhancing user satisfaction and product success. Applying this with the various levels of prototypes along the process of design from paper prototypes (rapid iterations with the early discovery phase), to refined final resin prints (within final form, mechanical and usability studies within the evaluation phase), is integral to a successful design journey and likely will remove as much error as possible along the way.

Giving customers what they want is often not ideal. Customers are focused on what they want and Industrial Designers MUST see the bigger picture. Sustainable design, Ethical design, Green design and similar methodologies have to be worked in using design psychology and logic. For example, when convincing a client to use more environmentally friendly materials it is often necessary to meet them where they are. If we use Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a tool clients near the bottom must be convinced through the logic of finance and ego, those higher up can be convinced through possible marketing niches and those even higher can be convinced through the greater good and how the long term customer perspective will influence the company.
