To help people think "outside the box", I like to pose a question to get people out of common thinking that the way things are now and have been for years is the only way something can be done. Ask either: (1) if we were designing this system (such as a tax system) from scratch today, what would it look like (ignore what you know about the existing system); or (2) if a group landed on Earth from another solar system and saw what we were doing on "x" what would they be surprised about and what suggestions for improvement might they have for us?

I will have personally discussed with the other leaders first, and knowing I would prefer a workshop I would ask if they want to attend or I would share their ideas on their behalf. Having the workshop allows every voice involved to be heard, this should give you a truly diverse perspective from all stakeholders.

Four plumbers, four different opinions. But each view helped paint a clearer picture of the problem and potential solutions. Get your team chatting. Whenever starting conversations surrounding this topic or more specifically brain fog, I like to start the discussion by asking this “What are we missing here?” In conversations that I’m not leading but rather a contributing member, I appreciate it when the head leader takes that same approach. No plan is a perfect plan but without a plan, a team can end up at a stage where they’re in complete chaos or disarray. When these moments are presented, the best angle to take is to figure out what is missing. Ex: Alternatives to the current plan or event, possible counter arguments to a current statement or unlikely risks for a risk management. In my experience, these approaches are simple to start but consistency is needed to exit brain fog.

Because I would host a workshop it gives me a great chance to do this. Each idea I would celebrate during the workshop. "Yes, good idea X!" "I like it!" "Oooh, ok, one second... Yup, nice!" "Lets add it to the list X, thanks for speaking up!" I would also make note that the person whose idea the removes the roadblock is further celebrated later down the line.

Recognize and Reward Creativity Incentives: • Recognition Programs: Implement programs to recognize and reward creative ideas and solutions. • Incentives: Offer incentives such as bonuses, extra time off, or public acknowledgment for innovative contributions. Lastly, recognize and celebrate creative efforts. When a team member comes up with an out-of-the-box idea, acknowledge it. Challenge Assumptions: To think "outside the box", we need to question what is "inside the box". Questioning established norms and assumptions can lead to innovative solutions, and encourage critical thinking. For example, let's look at a team of content creators, and one of the assumptions they might face. Assumption: Longer content performs better for SEO and engagement. Challenge: Instead of focusing solely on length, consider the depth and relevance of the content. Experiment with shorter, more concise pieces that deliver value quickly and efficiently.

Conceptual thinking and the tools and techniques which support it are very powerful. Introducing conceptual ideas into the everyday, makes the approach mainstream. Some techniques include: Mind mapping is a visual tool that helps organize thoughts and ideas around a central concept. It encourages the exploration of different connections and relationships between ideas, allowing for a more holistic understanding and generation of new concepts. Analogies involve comparing two different concepts or ideas to understand their similarities and differences. By finding similarities between unrelated concepts, analogies can help generate new insights and ideas.

Provide Time and Space for Creativity Dedicated Time: • Innovation Time: Allocate specific time for team members to work on creative projects or brainstorm without the pressure of immediate deadlines. • Flexible Schedules: Allow flexible schedules to accommodate creative thinking periods.
