What are the best practices for advising students to promote success and retention?

The cornerstone of effective advising lies in understanding students as unique individuals, not mere numbers or names on a roster. This requires delving deeper into their backgrounds, interests, strengths, weaknesses, aspirations, and challenges. By taking the time to know your students on a personal level, you can offer more personalized and impactful guidance that resonates with their individual circumstances and aspirations. In essence, effective advising begins with knowing your students as individuals and recognizing their unique backgrounds, interests, strengths, weaknesses, aspirations, and challenges.

To promote success and retention among students, it's vital to establish a deep understanding of each student, including their background and interests. This understanding lays the foundation for building a strong rapport, which, in turn, allows for the selection of appropriate examples and teaching methods that resonate with students. By doing so, concepts become more relatable and memorable, fostering both interest and retention in the subject matter.

Généralement, lors du 1er cours de l’année, je prends le temps d’apprendre à connaître mes étudiants. C’est le moment de se présenter individuellement et d’apprendre à connaître le professeur et/ou les autres étudiants. Si l’étudiant est trop réservé ou trop timide, on peut privilégier une solution plus simple en demandant aux étudiants de préciser leur histoire, leurs points forts et points faibles dans un écrit à rendre au professeur. Ainsi, l’étudiant peu à l’aise à l’oral peut tout de même s’exprimer. Les étudiants n’ont pas tous le même niveau de connaissances et surtout pas tous la même manière d’aborder l’apprentissage de notre matière. Il est du rôle du professeur d’aider l’étudiant à optimiser son apprentissage

Il est effectivement important de donner un cadre et une structure aux étudiants afin que ceux-ci ne soient pas trop perdus s’ils arrivent à l’école ou découvrent une nouvelle matière. Il peut être intéressant de leur donner dès le début de l’année le programme des cours de l’année. Leur expliquer comment se dérouleront les cours et leur expliquer le processus de notation qui les soucie généralement grandement. Plus nous sommes clairs, plus la confiance entre professeur et étudiants sera bonne ! Attention de ne pas sortir du cadre évoqué (promis) aux étudiants, cela peut être très mal perçu par les étudiants qui y verraient presque une trahison de la part du professeur. Il faut donc respecter le cadre donné en début d’année.

Estabelecer objetivos claros para orientandos é fundamental para o sucesso do processo de amadurecimento de um mentorado. Essas expectativas fornecem um roteiro claro do que é esperado, reduzindo ambiguidades e frustrações. De mon expérience en tant qu’enseignant, j’ai retenu qu’il était important de valoriser les étudiants dans leur réussite et dans leurs progrès. Il ne faut pas uniquement retenir ou souligner leurs erreurs. Les étudiants ont besoin de bienveillance et de confiance. Le rôle du professeur est important car il peut enfoncer ou à l’inverse aider l’étudiant à s’élever. Le professeur doit être disponible et accessible. Si ce n’est pas le cas, l’étudiant n’osera pas venir au professeur lui faire part de ses propres problèmes. Le professeur doit identifier les problématiques inhérentes à chaque élève, autant que possible. Le professeur doit faire preuve de pédagogie et d’humanité.

Some time back, I was discussing with a group of college students and trying to insist on the importance of learning and just summarised it in following points: 1. Life is too short to be wasted for nothing. 2. By learning, you live more than a life, yours and the ones before you, by simply reading. 3. You learn from failures of other by avoiding their failures and sometimes examine them. 4. Learning and education are two different things. Learning is ever-lasting. In nutshell, I was trying to help them to reflect on their life journey and how learning can make most of it.

Keeping this simple !!!! What leads to earn. Just take “L” from Lead and add to earn. It’s L+earn = Learn So, one needs to “learn to earn” And learning is all about Reflection-Action and Again Reflection.. Keep learning!!!

J’ai pu remarquer qu’il était plus facile de pouvoir réaliser cela quand les étudiants réalisent des cas pratiques. Il est ainsi possible de débriefer ensuite sur leur prestation et les conseiller au mieux. Ils sont généralement plus attentifs aux conseils formulés par le professeur ou par leurs collègues qui ont assisté à leur prestation. Avant de demander l’avis de ceux ayant assisté à la présentation, il peut être très intéressant de demander à l’élève lui-même de faire sa propre auto-critique positive et/ou négative. Ceci permet alors de voir ce que l’étudiant aurait détecté comme axe de progression et à l’inverse de souligner les manques non perçus par l’étudiant. L’entraînement et la supervision sont très importants pour evoluer

I believe students can be highly empowered when, as an educator, we make them protagonists by giving real life projects as part of their course curriculumn. When students step out to take action towards the projects and in the end, when they accomplished it. They themselves have the feeling of empowerment from within. Since, moving out of their comfort zone, withtaking all necessary precautions, they know reality of outside classroom. That reality not only provides hands on experience but an inner contentment. For advocating, as an educator, we don't have to advocate their projects, their projects are themselves speaks volume, depending on the amount of efforts and classroom learning they put in.

L’écoute et la bienveillance sont 2 qualités fondamentales pour enseigner. Chaque élève dispose de moyens différents et de compétences différentes pour évoluer et performer. Être à l’écoute des élèves permet de comprendre et d’entendre leurs besoins respectifs. L’enseignant doit analyser ce qui permettrait d’améliorer leur apprentissage et leurs performances. L’élève doit être en bonne condition et en confiance pour performer. Un enseignant peut et doit encourager l’étudiant en difficulté. Bien souvent l’enseignant ne prête attention qu’aux bons éléments de la classe qui performent et qui reflètent la réussite. L’enseignant doit guider tous les étudiants présents dans sa classe, quelles que soient leur profil.

À la fin de l’année 2014 (fin de ma première année d’enseignement), les étudiants ont rempli un questionnaire de qualité de manière anonyme afin d’évaluer mon enseignement ainsi que ma personnalité en cours. Le résultat de ces questionnaires m’a permis de prendre conscience des points forts de mon enseignement et des axes de progrès à envisager pour ma 2e année d’enseignement. Il n’est pas question de régler ses comptes avec l’enseignement dans ce type de questionnaire mais bel et bien de lui donner les moyens d’améliorer son enseignement et son attitude en cours. Le bilan annuel avec la hiérarchie ou la pédagogie doit également permettre de donner de meilleurs moyens à l’enseignant pour améliorer ses qualités d’enseignement.

Plan in the beginning of the semester to give out extra grades based on extra work because you can use that extra-grade assignment in the middle of the semester to uplift the spirits of students that are struggling in the course. It is a good backup plan to re-engage students with the course instead of closing the doors on them.

I think these practices should be done by great teachers and educators; someone who actually takes the time to get to know their students, who understands their goals and challenges, and who gives them personalized advice and support to promote success and retention.

Pour pouvoir aider au mieux les étudiants, un SUIVI doit absolument être assuré et ce, dès le début des premiers cours de l’année. Un système de contrôle continu peut permettre d’évaluer les étudiants et de leur donner des notes qui permettront de situer leur niveau du moment par rapport au niveau attendu. Enfin, l’enseignant doit être disponible pour répondre aux questions / interrogations de ses étudiants, sans jugement, avec bienveillance et écoute.
