Strategic goals are the onset and general direction of the organization. It defines the company's long term objectives and ambitions. It sets the company's position in the long run and seeks to achieve greater heights as it aspires to become bolder in the market. Operational goals are short term based with tactical objectives defined to direct the company's alternative courses of action. It tends to be more specific and reasonable to be implemented currently and in the next few periods. It draws well defined targets aimed at hitting the key performance indicators set by the management of the company.

Finding the right balance between these two types of objectives is essential for a company's overall success. In this article, we'll explore the best ways to achieve this balance. 1. I believe it's best to simplify and to add the word target and tactics to the conversation. My example would be: your strategic goals are aimed at reaching the long term target defined by your companies mission , vision, and value statements. Where as your operational goals are the corrective short term measurables and tactics that keeps the company on target.

I agree with the above, statement. I would just add that having a true balance empowers all levels within the company. Whereas unbalance empowers only a subset of the company.

In terms of balancing my view is following 1. Appropriate people, process and system resources should be behind operational goals. 2. Keep open communication 3. Linking individual KPI with operational goals and this back to strategy is very critical.
