Externalities can be internalized by (i) Awareness (ii) Compensation. Awareness may take longer time. Considering the negative impact of externalities, businesses must pay for the cost of negative impact. by is to make businesses pay for the costs of the negative effects they cause, like pollution, emission. The cost can be in form of taxes, transfer pricing adjustments. On the flip side, we can reward behaviors that benefit everyone, such as giving tax breaks to companies that install solar panels.

The internalization of a negative externality essentially involves compelling the producer of that externality to consider it as a cost. Commonly, the solution is to impose a tax on its production, which would be the "sin" taxes as in our tax reform. However, with the advent of the carbon credit market, perhaps the internalization of production externalities does not need to be as coercive. It will still be a cost for the polluting company but will generate positive externalities in the economy that go beyond tax revenue.

The debate on internalizing externalities through Pigouvian taxes and subsidies is ongoing, with both approaches having their own strengths and challenges. Pigouvian taxes aim to discourage negative externalities, such as pollution, by imposing a cost equal to the harm caused, while subsidies incentivize activities with positive externalities, like renewable energy production. Both approaches have been shown to be effective in addressing externalities, but careful consideration of the context, including economic, social, and political factors, is crucial in determining the best approach. Complementary policies, such as regulations and direct investments, can enhance the effectiveness of Pigouvian taxes.

Externalities can be unintended effects or anticipated impacts. The key point is they have a (social) cost. One option for internalizing externalities is to apply the financial consequences of expected impacts beyond the restricted circle of the decision-making sphere, with a carbon price, taxes,etc. Externalities can also be internalized by establishing policies that stimulate acceptable/sustainable behavior with preferential financial interest rates for investment, supporting promoting transformation towards new business models and fostering its ecosystem (partners, coopetitors..) - requiring the conditions of a regulated market, with information symmetry, and thus the intervention of the institutions with policies.

The Coase theorem is an efficient way to utilise allocation of resources, in order to make effective decisions, leading to a mutually beneficial outcome that aids internalising externalities. For instance, if a group of farmers have property rights over clean air, they can negotiate with the factory owner. The farmers might offer compensation to the factory to install pollution control measures, reducing emissions. Alternatively, the factory might compensate the farmers for the damage caused. In either case, the negotiation leads to an outcome where the externality is internalized—the costs or benefits of pollution are factored into the decision-making process

The Coase theorem could be summarised as a neoliberistic statement, and surely represents an efficient and quick way to reach a mutually beneficial goal.

While CAC regulations offer simplicity, clarity, and guaranteed outcomes, they may lack flexibility to adapt to different situations or promote innovation. The administrative burden and potential disincentive for technological advancements are also drawbacks. In the ongoing debate, market-based instruments like tradable permits and carbon taxes are seen as alternative approaches providing flexibility and innovation incentives. Some advocate for a combination of CAC and market-based instruments to leverage their strengths.

Permits involve limited allowances for activities like emitting pollutants, creating a market where entities can buy and sell permits to incentivize efficient reduction. Certificates grant rights or privileges not tied to specific activities, promoting compliance and investment in cleaner technologies. While advantageous in cost-efficiency, flexibility, and innovation, challenges like complexity, equity, and effectiveness require attention. Debates include exploring diverse applications and combining with other policy tools for a versatile and market-driven approach.

Social norms can shape voluntary actions through positive reinforcement, social pressure, and internalization, while voluntary actions can influence social norms by leading by example, challenging norms, and facilitating collective action. Context, individual agency, and ethical considerations are key factors to keep in mind when analyzing this interaction. Examples such as recycling programs driven by social norms, volunteering inspired by community practices, and environmental activism challenging established norms illustrate this relationship between voluntary actions and social norms.

El incentivo principal de los proyectos de triple impacto, es que los integrantes más pequeños de la cadena de valor (agricultores familiares), se integren efectivamente a la economía rentable, ya que es la única manera de garantizar una masa vibrante que a su vez le genere mayor retorno al agente promotor (agente económico grande, que de modo contrario no tendría incentivo para dejar su modelo comercial actual). Si las condiciones de mercado mejorar para ambos actores (porque el mercado paga más por comercio justo, o porque el fondeo es más barato para triple impacto, u otros), se genera un círculo virtuoso con un retorno superior al actual sin rostro social. De modo contrario, se abandonarán una vez más los proyectos, por no rentabilizar.

Social norms should be the basis of any decision-making, no matter what way to internalize externalities is chosen. But social norms alone are not enough to produce real internalization of externalities.

For example, a smart contract could ensure that a company pays compensation to farmers for any pollution exceeding a certain threshold. 2.⁠ ⁠Gamification and Incentive Programs: Gamified platforms where individuals or businesses earn rewards for reducing negative externalities/creating positive ones. This approach taps into human psychology. 3. Predictive Analytics: By forecasting environmental impacts or social disruptions, proactive measures can be taken to prevent negative externalities.

Hemos participado en el financiamiento de una cadena de valor de agricultura familiar en el ande peruano, financiado por una empresa de gran empresa en el marco de su responsabilidad social corporativa. Si el proyecto hubiera contado con un crédito fiscal por el íntegro de lo desembolsado, que esté condicionado a que se integre efectivamente al productor familiar con los mercados de destino idealmente extranjeros (y que cobre parte del retorno total), de tal manera que el promotor es el primer interesado en sostener el proyecto, logrando una menor materia imponible y el impacto reputacional positivo. Si se agrega tecnología de bloques a toda la cadena de suministros, desde el campo de cultivo hasta el consumidor, se optimiza el modelo.

Awareness and creating a sense of responsibility from an early age together with small incentives both tangible and non tengible can be instrumental.
