Defining the scope of emissions is tbe most important step of quantifying carbon emissions. Scope 1 would be direct emissions. Scope 2 would be emissions from purchased utilities. Scope 3 would be emissions along the lifecycle of the product from cradle to product and from product to grave. Defining the scope of emissions is important not only to see the type of emissions by an otganisation but also to tackle the emissions itself. Scope 1 emissions is the easiest to tackle and can be done through optimisation and electrification. Scope 2 can be tackled through changing to renewable sources of electricity. Scope 3 is the toughest to decarbonise as it involve exrensive collaboration and disclosure across organisations.

Establishing clear parameters is crucial. Once the baseline year calculated, companies can understand where most of their emissions come from and from there, identify the data areas where they should gather more granular data to improve their measurement capacities. For example, a spend-based calculation for the Scope 3 Category 1 can be completed with a supplier engagement strategy to get supplier-specific data for your top 20% suppliers, which will significantly increase the calculation quality.

When undertaking an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), many organisations use industry averages. It is important to work with individual suppliers to build carbon footprint models for their specific product & for all variants of that product.
