What common mistakes should you avoid when framing arguments in an academic lecture?

Students are really great in finding new perspectives of anything put before them. The more we frame the subject the less the deviation and arguments. I always define the overall subject and what we are going to address in today's class. I also brief the next class goal at the end of the class. It helps them to prepare and work within the boundaries we set.

Never make the mistake of assuming anything especially facts not in evidence. Even in academic discussions, debates or otherwise we must recognize that all academics are not always agreed upon. A key point to remember is that academics on a given subject may very well be taught from different perspectives.

Resist the urge to boil down complex issues into one-sided narratives. Present different perspectives and acknowledge the nuances of the topic. Don't misrepresent opposing viewpoints to make them easier to attack. Engage with the actual arguments being made in a fair and balanced way. In an academic setting, one of the best approaches is to walk students through a fully developed debate between two theorists. In my nonverbal communication class, I teach the debate between Timothy Levine and Judee Burgoon over interpersonal deception, and also between Alan Fridlund and Dacher Keltner over basic emotions theory. I explain to students each side's strongest argument, how each side refuted the other, and most importantly how each one interpreted their own data and pointed out problems in their opponent's work. All along, I ask them who they think is winning, and what reason they give for that opinion. At the end, I tell them which theorist I agree with (Burgoon and Fridlund) and why.

Academic lectures can become overly stiff, complex, and... (sorry to say it) - boring. Use of storytelling and rhetorical devices can have the effect of humanizing the topic and making your learning objectives relatable and memorable. Using them at the beginning of a lecture to semi-informally "tee up" the rest of the lecture, can transition students from whatever they were doing before your lecture, to where you want them to go with your academic material. Another good place is near the 2/3 mark of your lecture. It can "wake up" your audience, reinforce technical material that you covered in the first half or 2/3 or your lecture, and bring energy to your closing content. Enjoy and good luck!

Nothing truly compares to live speech production but do your best to simulate it. First practice individual parts and points out loud. Stopping and starting as needed to refine and clarify your message. Then set a timer and go, even if you are fumbling work it out as if the audience is live. Forcing yourself to fumble and recover not just stop and reboot will allow you to actually explore where your mind went and why it didn't go as planned. Your speech should suck the first few times you do it, embrace that let it be bad so you can make it better. Let your mind explore the rabbit trails it created for itself. You might just discover a better path of logic and a more natural delivery.

I am sure most people would chose to listen to a live presentation rather than picking it up on catch up later. This way, the audience can see the speakers expressions and enthusiasm and feel the atmosphere. They are more likely to remember key points if they hear them delivered live. There should also be several key points that will be remembered and perhaps repeated to associates that were not at the talk.

Make sure your argument is not biased (observation bias is a key one) and be mindful of nor making it personal. Stick to the subject and be open minded

First, stop thinking of it as an argument. Rethink it from the prism of the broadest, widest and most indepth solution that you are about to put forth. Step back and check your own biases, your own identity traps. It takes courage & you will begin to realise that you actually might feel a little differently on topics, more flexible, more reasonable & strongly about some where previously you were not. This becomes more wholistic. Spend time on framing thoughts, combining instinct and balancing it with non identity. Non identity means you do not hold one idea over the other. You want to be as true & whole as possible. Write, rewrite till it falls into place. Keep rehearsing as you write. Conviction comes from solutions, not identity.

The aim of education is to always provide as diverse perspectives as possible so that our worldviews are widened and we emerge out of our own silo thinking into reimagining what can be possible or plausible. As such when making an argument it will be important to frame it from an interdisciplinary approach that allows for different fields of studies to be examined, which will make for much richer discussions. It is time we return back to academia that inspires creative introspection and freedom of reimagining our worlds to tackle the interconnected challenges of our near term future.

I find that if you are not passionate and experienced with the topic, I would turn down the opportunity or have a guest speaker. The audience can spot insincerity.
