What are the different types of international organizations that work in poverty reduction?

Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States based in Brussels, Belgium. June 6, 1975, 46 countries signed in Guyana the Georgetown Agreement establishing the ACP Group of States. Currently, 79 countries of which 47 from Sub-Saharan Africa, 16 from the Caribbean and 15 from the Pacific aim to eradicate poverty, inclusive sustainable development and progressive integration in the world economy. From legal framework Lome convention (1975) to Cotonou Partnership Agreement (2015)and soon Samoa Partnership Agreement, the 79 States maintains privileged relationships with the European Union through 3 key actions areas : development co-operation, political dialogue and trade. It also provides funds for development projects.

There are many organizations working on poverty reduction, and among the well-known ones are UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), the World Bank, the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, the IMF (International Monetary Fund), Oxfam, CARE, Save the Children, the International Labor Organization, WHO (World Health Organization), and the Asian Development Bank.

For people interested in working abroad with international organizations fighting poverty and hunger, one option is UNV (United Nations Volunteers) which are helpful in providing assignments with other UN agencies and programmes. This is a very good opportunity for entry-level assignments, for junior people that are considering a career in the UN system. One aspect to be considered is that posts in specialized agencies are subjet to geographical representation, implying that for people with certain nationalities it might be difficult to get a continuing position compared with other nationalities. Each organization is different so interested applicants should check this before applying to lear about their chances.

In my opinion, no International organization can have a sustainable impact on poverty reduction. They might help people to have plans and guide them but when it comes to eradicating poverty then I believe every community should work by using their traditional way of helping each other or whatever their religion or belief system is teaching them, for example, if Muslim countries want to eradicate poverty the best way is through Zakat. unfortunately, I don't know other religions and their way of supporting each other.

UN agencies measure poverty regularly to learn which poverty reduction strategies work and which do not. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducts independent thematic and programmatic evaluations to generate objective evidence, achieve greater accountability, and facilitate improved learning from past experience. The UNDP also conducts Human Impact Assessments to evaluate the overall impact of poverty reduction programs on people, their living conditions, health, access to education, livelihoods, food security, social status, gender equality and women's empowerment, and the evolution of multi-dimensional poverty and human development.

Before we as team volunteers started our journey in serving impoverished citizens in rural areas in Senegal we ventured out to visit several village communities that mentioned they never laid eyes on a human being or group that cared to be interested in the upliftment of the communities in which they resided. What NGO today can make a difference in eradicating poverty completely? Unfortunately poverty is complex and systematically generational on purpose imposed on the masses of people it means to oppress. Sure collectively we may can put a dent in making a difference and yes we know the governing administrative bodies should practice moral ethical leadership aiding humanity. Eradicating poverty needs a restructuring revolution.

Multilateral development banks (MDBs) like the World Bank, AfDB, ADB, IDB, and EBRD are essential in the fight against poverty. They provide financial support, technical expertise, and a range of services to help developing countries achieve economic and social development while addressing poverty, inequality, and environmental concerns. MDBs are pivotal players in global poverty reduction efforts.

In my experience as an African born, raised, and educated, I saw many UN, US, and European International and NGO’s working towards development and poverty reductions. I worked with the UNWFP, USAID, and was UNV in Africa prior to finding refuge in the US. Some makes impact many don’t. At the Millennium Forum, we presented the African Recommendations which gave birth to the current SDG’s-the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all heads of States to end poverty by 2015. We still talk about poverty reduction. In the same year 2000 we, African Diaspora created Amahoro International to empower the youth in their communities through education and economic projects.Today they transform communities. United Nations Agencies. Multilateral Development Banks. Non-Governmental Organizations. Social Enterprises. Networks and Alliances.

To eliminate poverty, one must have personally experienced it & visit these places to conduct a thorough investigation, not from the comfort or the govt. The govt is not impoverished, thus will never do it right. In their individual capacities, organizations including the World Bank, UNICEF, OPAD, EPN, Global Citizen, World Relief, Care International, & EWBI-I are helping. But poverty is still rising, particularly in developing countries. REASON? corruption as a result of the poor people not receiving the charity. Aid can't make things better. Technical skills, education, a shift in perspective, & an appropriate start-to-finish package can all help to lessen poverty. Instead of providing assistance, you build to increase self-sufficiency.
