Some types of founders are easier to have conflicts, which require more attentions for entrepreneurs. Professor Noam Wasserman once presented analysis showing that founder relationships are less stable—that is, more likely to end in breakup—when founders were close friends prior to launching a venture together than when they were co-workers or strangers. Wasserman explains that founders who are friends and family members are less likely than co-workers or strangers to have difficult conversations about roles and strategies, out of fear that conflict could jeopardize their friendship or familial bonds.

As an entrepreneur running a consulting company, I face two kinds of conflicts: internally amongst team members and externally with and among clients. Both can be addressed with understanding the genesis of the problem. Meeting and talking separately and together helps, as does learning from the past. At times, conflict's root cause lies in an action I took. This action would have been taken knowingly or unknowingly—but for the business's good. And that may result in conflict within and outside. If that is the root cause, I often take a step back and reanalyse the related decisions. Conflict resolution among external stakeholders is more difficult, and I take assistance from 3rd parties mutually known to everyone.

Everyone on the team learns everyone else's preferred communication style and other preferences and seeks to communicate with them in a way that resonates with them.
