Over the past 3 years, our VC fund had to screen 800+ companies per annum. That's a lot of work for GPs to process. On average 12 data points for the first screening and another 31 data points for the second screening per company. Look if you don't have at least a rudimentary understanding of how to bring complex data sets together to help create, refine, and validate hypotheses you're putting yourself and your firm at a dramatic disadvantage. This doens't mean you have to be a programmer and go learn python or scala (but it would help, especially if your doing a lot of data wrangling in excel), but you do need to understand how these things can be leveraged to provide insights. You should have a knowledge of various alternative data sets that might be beneficial or how data could be scrapped to provide insights that might otherwise not be readily relevant.

Subject matter experts - i.e. PhDs. They will be custom to going through large data sets and spotting anomalies within the data. Moreover, PhDs within the specific field will have their method/protocol of how to process and analyse the data rapidly while maintaining accuracy.
