What do you do if you need to showcase your teamwork skills during an interview?

Don't just reflect on your own instance where you contributed to a team's success, but think about when you've witnessed someone being a great leader and teamplayer

Reflecting on past teamwork experiences is crucial for interviews because it equips you with concrete examples that demonstrate your collaborative skills. By analyzing specific situations, you can identify your strengths and learning moments within a team context, which can be compelling evidence of your teamwork capabilities to potential employers. Remember, the ability to articulate your role and the team's journey authentically can set you apart from other candidates.

To demonstrate a "soft" skill in an interview involves defining the skill and providing 1 or 2 examples of how you used the skill effectively and successfully. Use the STAR or PAR method for 2 examples of each key skill as you don't know how a question will be asked, and 1 example may be more appropriate than another. DO NOT practice 100s of questions as you do not know how behavioral ?s will be designed and you can't cover all. Don't create unnecessary anxiety memorizing answers. There are questions you can anticipate and prepare for, but it's a waste of time and energy to practice and memorize for behavioral questions. Describe the process for teamwork or other skill demonstrating your understanding as well as your actual performance.

Highlight specific examples of successful collaboration with teams, highlight your contributions and problem-solving skills, and demonstrate flexibility and good communication skills.

Share examples: Talk about successful team projects you've been a part of. Describe your role, contributions, and how you collaborated with others to achieve the team's goals. This demonstrates not only effective collaboration but also my ability to adapt to changing circumstances, a crucial aspect of teamwork in dynamic environments.

Adaptability is one of the greatest traits in demand with employers. Considering the dynamic situations which keep changing and are also unpredictable, as an individual who can adapt himself/herself to different working styles and situations can collaborate well and work effectively in teams. Keep success stories ready where you can demonstrate your 'adaptability.

Don't use the words "I'm adaptable", if you can help it. Instead use phrases like I've been used to being in environments where I've had to dive in a deep end and get stuck in, with things often moving (and changing) at a fast pace that I had to keep up with, learning as I went..

Clear and timely communication is vital for project success. I ensure everyone stays informed by scheduling regular team meetings and utilizing tools like MS Teams for updates. Proactive communication prevents misunderstandings and keeps the team aligned towards our goals

Without good communication skills one cannot progress in one's career. Listening is more important than speaking. So, you need to demonstrate your active listening ability as well as oral communication skills which are so critical for team work. Importantly highlight your written communication skills so that you also demonstrate an image as a holistic communicator who can take the lead in projects and also be able to effectively communicate with teams to get the end result successfully.

Again, avoid saying "I'm a great communicator."- every says that! BE a good communicator in the interview by listening intently and adapting what you're going to say according to the audience. If you're interviewing for a remote position, ensure you have natural light in front of you (where possible) and have your camera set up so that your hands show. This is a good way to earn the trust of those you are communicating with.

One great way to showcase leadership skills if you don't have experience in a managerial role, is to speak to any projects you've worked on (in college, or in life)- talk about how you found ways to bring people together to achieve a common goal by listening to the team and making the most of every persona and their individual skills.

You will demonstrate how you effectively guided the team throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring that objectives were clearly defined and met. You will emphasize my proactive approach to problem-solving, fostering collaboration, and maintaining open communication channels to overcome challenges and deliver results.

Initiative is a strong part of leadership. This can come into action at the start of a meeting- setting the tone and framework for project assigned or it can come anytime there after depending on personal strengths. You may be a relective individual who likes to listen to others points of view first or you may be a visionary type of person who jumps right in and communicates where you see the project going. Know who you are and how you contribute effectively- do so confidently and share your results. This is leadership moving the group towards results.

Share a story about a successful project where you collaborated effectively with team members, such as coordinating tasks and communicating openly. Explain your contribution to the team's success, whether it was taking on a leadership role, offering creative solutions, or supporting team members in achieving their goals. Describe the positive results of your teamwork efforts, like meeting deadlines, exceeding client expectations, or increasing team productivity. Illustrate how your teamwork skills can benefit the potential employer, such as fostering a positive work environment, driving innovation, or achieving company objectives. Keep focusing on key details that demonstrate your ability to work effectively in a team setting.

I actually disagree with always having to give a positive outcome. That's not how life works. Sometimes the outcome is not what we hoped/ wanted. Instead, be real and talk about your learnings!

You need to demonstrate your credibility and authenticity so that team members trust you. This is one of the most crucial aspects of team work. Without coming across as authentic and credible, one cannot be a team player.

Use the STAR Approach S/T - Describe the Situation or Task A - the Action You took R - the Results from the Action you took.

Avoid focusing on being a team leader alone. The ability to be led is critical for effective team building. Use examples of how you've led initiatives with confidence and desired results coupled with examples of how you've also encouraged others to lead by supporting initiatives in non leadership roles.

During the interview, You'll emphasize not only your contributions but also your ability to think outside the box and employ creativity when faced with challenges in achieving our goals. you'll showcase instances where your leadership stood out by fostering collaboration, leveraging your experience and knowledge to find innovative solutions, and actively assisting team members. By demonstrating a blend of leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills, you aim to set yourself apart and showcase your value to the team.

Choose your example/ career story based on the role you are interviewing for and keep it as closely relevant to it as possible. For example, if you are more experienced and are interviewing for a senior role, choose an example that demonstrates how you can collaborate with other leaders in the organization on strategic matters. Or share an example when you worked in a cross-geography/ global team. If you are say early in your career, choose examples of teamwork at job or even during your college/ personal projects/ volunteer work that show how you awareness of your unique skills, eagerness to contribute to the team goal and openness to learn from those more experienced than you.
