What do you do if you want to be considered for a promotion?

It's useful to back up your readiness assessment with some good quantitative and qualitative data where this is possible. E.g. if you have grown a part of the business or output in some way, can you quantify that somehow? For areas that aren't easy to quantify, can you get feedback from key stakeholders or others who were involved to add weight to your case? This can really add some great credibility to back up statements about your readiness.

Interesting question and here is my view Take initiative and go above and beyond expectations - identify areas for improvement, and propose solutions. Track your accomplishments - Maintain record, this will help you know what good is all done and whats pending to attack. Network within company - meet new people, learn people coming from other organizations who bring new cultures and environment to the table.

Recognize that just because you want to be promoted does not mean that you are ready to be promoted. Just because you are good at your current job does not mean that you will be good at the next job. They may have very different skill sets, and potentially skills you have not been able to acquire yet. Sit down with the person who makes the decisions on promotions. Say to them, "I am very interested in XYZ position. I would like to know what you think I need to do to prepare myself to take on that role. Then be humble enough to listen, learn, and accept. Once you know what you need to do, build a plan with that person to get you there.

Assess yourself and then, especially if you’re a woman or have suffered from imposter syndrome, give yourself twice the credit you currently are offering yourself. You want to be realistic about what you contribute and what you’re ready for and not undersell yourself. “Call a friend”—someone who knows you well and that you trust and respect their opinions, otherwise it’ll be a useless inquiry. Additionally and ideally, by the time you’re want to pursue a promotion, you’ve already had multiple conversations with your boss/mentor/sponsor. Perhaps you haven’t had conversations about a SPECIFIC opportunity, but you should already be working on what is needed for the next level up, if that’s what you desire.

ASK, ASK, ASK. You need to communicate your promotion aspirations to your Boss and your Skip Manager. They should know it. Often, if you don't ask, you don't get!

Without doubt let people know you are interested in promotional opportunities. Ask the manager or HR what opportunities there are. Offer to stand in, cover, act up, into a role. Offer to deputies and take on additional duties to learn and prepare for the real opportunity. By doing this you get to experience the positions and the pressures and the reality of the promotional level With promotion comes additional responsibility and a change of role - get as lunch learning prior to the upgrade as possible & good luck & have fun :-)

The best way to get what you want in life is ASK FOR IT. People leaders, bosses, managers - they aren't mind readers. They won't know what you want unless you ask for it. This might seem obvious, but in my experience it's a critical step that most people skip. If you don't ask, they won't offer. And that's not their fault - it's yours. This is why self-assessment is so important. If you're confident that you're getting results, you'll thrive in the promotional role, and you want to take on the additional responsibility - asking for the role should come more easily.

Actually, I agree that COMMUNICATION is key when considering a Promotion. You can't be silent as your superiors, team members, customers are not mind readers. Communicate your intentions, and do that effectively.

If you start making efforts to nurture your network when you're ready for a new, more elevated opportunity then you've waited too long. You should consistently network throughout your career. Seek out opportunities where you can add value to your network, and lean into your network when you think they can support you and your goals. The best opportunities in your career will rarely come from a job posting. They'll come through your network and the value your network see you contribute into the workforce.

Build strong relationships with mentors and sponsors. Seek guidance from experienced individuals within or outside your organization to gain valuable insights and advice on your career progression. Also, make sure you get a sponsor internally, to support your promotion.

Nine times out of ten, it’s not just about what you know, it’s about who you know. Approach people with curiosity and seek to understand what they do, who they serve and what keeps them up at night. Make it about THEM. When you do want to make it about you, which is ok, make sure you have clear and well thought out questions; you don’t want to waste people’s time nor be seen as unprepared. Even if you think you know what position you want next, I still recommend this. Finding out about an organization or industry is ALWAYS beneficial to the job you do now and your future. The higher up you go, the more diverse knowledge you need.

It is the idea of Genuine Interest, and not trying to play pretence, living off who you are not, because you have a goal, a target- Promotion! Once promotion is achieved, what's next? Stop attending events? Stop networking throughout your career? Cut off relationships? Being relevant in your career should be the goal, and not the intention of getting a promotion alone.

This is vital when you let others know you are looking for promotional opportunities request additional feedback on what you need to learn to achieve the next operational level. You would, hopefully, already have the feedback as part of your performance review and if not make it happen now

Fully understand the process and timelines. What happens and when e.g. do you need to do something as part of it such as a presentation, or attending a panel? Do you have good awareness of the decision-making criteria?

Consider approaching the topic from the perspective of your employer. Instead of framing your desire for a promotion as simply a personal aim/goal, analyze whether an actual business gap exists that could be resolved by you, and with a commensurate level of responsibility that would either make a direct promotion OR a newly created title a logical next step.

Seek additional responsibilities. It's important to showcase your willingness to take on more challenges and contribute to the growth of the team or organization.
