One needs to remember that your personal brand is the most important thing. Many agents come from the corporate world where the employer is the brand and they are just employees. In the world of real estate, your brokerage should allow you to make your brand as identifiable as legally allowed. And you as the agent should realize you are working to grow YOUR brand, not the brand of your brokerage, that is the job of the brokerage (to market THEIR business). Agents many times lose the concept or focus that they are a business within a business, but their brand is the most important thing to focus on and build. Build a memorable brand for yourself, whether that is as an individual agent or a team.

I think the competition is within yourself rather than with other realtors. Obviously, there are a few "influencer" real estate gurus that attract total strangers as leads via social media. Some tout 50-500 leads a month! Yet, they never state how many of the prospective "leads" actually become clients who successfully complete a transaction. I think most of these people are more entertainer personalities than competent realtors. A successful realtor must compete with a multitude of distractions to maintain his or her consistent marketing program. The central focus of the marketing program is to connect with people who are in your target (geographic and demographic) market, transform connections into relationships, and maintain them.

One of the best CRM programs in history was created by Joe "The World's Greatest Salesman" Girard and explained in his book, How to Sell Anything to Anybody, in which he described his 13 rules for success. By his third year selling automobiles he became the number one new retail car and truck salesman in the world and maintained that title until he retired. During the last 12 years he sold cars by appointment only! One of Joe's famous tag lines was, "Let me sell you a lemon so I can show you how good our service department is!" He used index cards to catalog personal information about every customer.
