What do you do if your sustainability network is not growing?

First of all, think about your WHY. Why do you want to grow your sustainability network? Is it to find a job? To inspire more people? To create partnerships? Depending on your goal, you will need to develop a different strategy. And that strategy should be tailored to your specific audience/network. For example, you would develop one strategy to engage with more recruiters, hiring managers and founders if you want a job. Whilst you will develop a different one to engage with business development and partnership managers if you wanted to create more partnerships.

Are your goals still relevant to you. Goals can change day to day. Take a step back and revaluate, to make the relevant changes or set new goals. This will give you greater focus and help you achieve a greater outcome.

When faced with a stalled sustainability network, reassess your goals for relevance and attainability. Ensure they are clear and compelling, resonating with potential members. A focused mission acts as a beacon, attracting and engaging members effectively. Clarifying objectives can reignite enthusiasm and facilitate progress within the network.

Refine your message: Identify your network's unique value proposition and tailor it to resonate with potential members. Expand your outreach: Look beyond your usual circles. Explore relevant conferences, workshops, and online communities. Become a value giver: Share valuable resources, highlight member achievements, and offer opportunities for collaboration. A little "thank you" goes a long way. Fresh Content: Inject new, relevant content or discussions that reignite interest and debate. Invite to Contribute: Encourage members to share their own stories or expertise. Ownership amps up engagement.

Engagement will look different depending on the goals that you have set for your network plans. Don't forget to track engagement based on those specific goals you set. The best way to get people hooked isn't fancy marketing tricks, it's about solving problems they might have, even if they don't realize it yet. Make sure your target audience feels like you're talking directly to them. Everything you say, where you say it, and how you say it should be geared towards them, and you should track how well it works based on the goals you set.

Thinking outside the box. Changing your mindset, and opening yourself up to new and more creative thinking, will not only increase your productivity, but will give you a fresh and wider approach, to the new an unfamiliar, but also open up to the endless possibilities.

Provide hope. Show up regularly in aligned but different spaces, and explain that your part of the fight is one that can provide wins, and therefore worth joining. The negative messages in this area of work are strong, but we can fight their prevalence by sharing wins, as well as moments of joy and resistance. Hope is a far more powerful factor in fighting climate change than fear, and this is sure to reinvigorate your network.

Keep this a very formal exercise, log the changes you make and the results you obtain. This will give you progress over time.

Networking is a never ending journey. You must constantly be looking to reach out past your existing horizons to engage with new like-minded individuals. Nothing quite beats in-person events when it comes to efficiently meeting new people and exchanging new ideas. That's why I always champion engaging in as many local events al possible, this helps you grow as a member of your community and promote your area of expertise.

Use striking headlines and images. Which keywords are popular in your network? Find the answer to this and focus on these in your content.

In my experience, people in the climate space want to share situations and help each other. When doing outreach, make sure you have a purpose and specifics for the person you are trying to connect with. Generic 'I would like to meet' messages tend to get ignored because of the vagueness. You could also try joining some slack groups that cater to similar interests.

Take a step back, and revaluate what you are doing. What is your long time goal? What is your purpose? What are you strengths and the weaknesses within your social media, make changes to meet the expectations of your wider audience. Even though its essential to keep the interest of the audience, its also good to highlight your interests, especially the importance of sustainability and why it is of significance to yourself, making changes for the future.

Besides social media, make the most of face-to-face networking events. That's where you'll find those unexpected conversations and meaningful connections that can truly make a difference! ;)

This is one of the channels described above. Be mindful whether it serves better your purpose or not. Social Media is incredibly useful, but the engagement and whether it actually influences your network is highly depending on your goals. A list of phone numbers in your pocket handbook may be much more significant that 100,000 followers in Instagram. But, if you want to spread a message and gain footprint, massive social media is the way to follow. getting access to influence lots of people at the same time with a sharp and powerful message is something that social media is unrivaled for.

Is the appeal to have a sustainable economy in the future? How can we make this happen and keep the drive for a more supportive, healthier and productive environment. Being able to entice your audience, is important. What keeps them interested and wanting to hear and see more? What is your intention, your goal, your gain?

People want what to see, feel and experience value in almost every interaction they face. If you can offer your audience meaningful and thought-provoking value, you will will see your sustainability networks flourish. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, but always remember to stick to your beliefs and be authentic, as this will offer your network a more meaningful experience that they can learn from.

Time is highly precious if you have chosen a sustainability goal that your network has to influence, and you may feel overwhelmed helping others. Be strategic with the help you give. You will change the world, but only one person at a time.

Step back, re-evaluate what your doing. What's working what isn't? Look from another perspective. Social networking is forever changing, sustainability is always evolving. If something works now doesnt mean its going to always work. Grow your current circles to suit that moment.
