What do you do if your teaching workflow needs a productivity boost?

At the start of a new teaching assignment, or new semester/quarter, try to make a flow chart or list of tasks you need to accomplish in the first few weeks of classes. You should also do this at the middle or end of a teaching assignment. Include five things that are important to accomplish, including setting up new course shells (for online or hybrid classes) or creating some new assignments or lectures. Decide when you are going to work on these five tasks. When are you most creative (mornings)? When can you put in details or set up classes without spending too much time in the process (evenings)? Keep this list from semester to semester, look it over, think about your most productive times and add or subtract accordingly.

Creating an effective teaching work schedule works best if you plan around your own work week. What tasks do you like to accomplish on Mondays, when the work opens? Setting up the lessons for that week? Looking over the course work for next week? On Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, if you have live lectures on those days, plan around that lecture time, and then keep track of what you discussed, including any questions students had about the material. On Thursdays, look over student assignments (if you grade them) and/or meet with your grading assistants by email, or zoom, to see how students are progressing with their work. On Fridays, ahead to next week's work (or, best practice, look ahead two or three week to the next big assignment).

In my views, incorporating digital tools and platforms that streamline administrative tasks, enhance communication with students and colleagues, facilitate content creation, and enable data-driven decision-making. By embracing technology, educators can automate routine processes, allocate more time to meaningful instructional activities, personalize learning experiences, and foster collaboration. Furthermore, technology provides access to vast resources, promotes engagement, and supports remote teaching and learning, in today's increasingly digital landscape. Therefore, integrating technology effectively can significantly enhance productivity and effectiveness in the teaching profession, benefiting both educators and students alike.
