The best and safe way to promote inclusion would be to get teachers trained not just with content knowledge, skills but also with emotional knowledge. What most people need is emotional maturity, once you have it, you are ready to role model behaviour that would make every student in the class realise that we need each other and is important that embrace every person despite their difference. Collectively this difference will make a difference.

Assessing the current situation should also include the wider climate outside of the schools, keeping in mind that policy created today will likely last beyond the presently-seated board. The question to ask is "What community values do we want to name explicitly that shape the student, educator and family experience in our schools?" Given that social and political climates change, our board responds with policies that name these values: our schools reflect a vision for a fair, just and equitable society; development of independent and critical thinking; recognition of the contributions of all cultures and peoples in shaping society; instruction that is supported by research; and with an awareness of the diversity of our community.
