Assessing the aspects and impacts helps determine environmental risks associated with the organization's activities and risk controls. Based on the nature of business, identify legal obligations (laws, guidelines, standards etc.) that applies to the business. Understanding the legal obligations applicable to the business helps in designing the EMS to specific legal requirements with respect to the business aspect, impacts and environmental risks.

I strongly agree with this comment. In order to have an effective EMS, the goals have to be very clear. Without a clear scope and objectives, the EMS will lose its effectiveness and essentially become a waste of money. EMS' are only ever going to be as effective as the objectives are clear and attainable.

A clear understanding of the organisation's scope will enable you identify the aspects and impacts from the tasks involved thereby allowing you to come up with SMART objectives. In my experiences, the efforts to maintain and request the stakeholder's compliance with the standardized structures are always the most challenging works.

Although this is step three I believe this step is very important for any size organization. Establishing structure and responsibilities in an organization is crucial for a successful Environmental Management System (EMS). And tge larger the organization the more weifgt this step carries. It promotes accountability, streamlines efforts, and fosters a culture of sustainability. Clear roles and communication enhance efficiency and adaptability, ensuring environmental goals are integrated into the organization's DNA.

With an EMS, it's easy to get bogged down in detail. That's why the first question to ask when writing policies and procedures is 'is it really needed?'. Any new policy or procedure needs to be approved, kept up-to-date, and audited, so avoid creating them for their own sake. However if you do really need to document your approach to an issue, the key thing is to keep it simple. I like to structure my EMS procedures with a few simply questions: - What do we need to do? - How do we do it? - Who needs to be involved? - Where is more information or relevant records available? Using this plain language approach helps avoid confusing jargon, and helps your colleagues and auditors more easily understand your approach too!

To create habits for employees, firstly it is necessary to understand what motivates them to comply with new regulations. The second question is whether it takes too much time or affects their main work? If the common incentives from complying do not constitute a positive movement, they may refuse to comply simply because the majority of other colleagues do not comply. If they spend too much time for complicated training and their main job is affected, they will be demotivated. In addition, the person directly leading the training program must be very patient and good at listening. Changing human behavior is different from changing the terms of business contracts. Aggressiveness, even with good motives, often lead to opposite effect.

A simple way to review and improve your EMS is to ensure you have a clear and comprehensive record of all your audit findings. Make sure that each audit finding is recorded against a relevant site, compliance requirement, responsible person (or team), and a topic. Once you have a large amount of audit findings, you can carry out simple trend monitoring - for instance a large number of audit findings relating to one environmental topic, site, or team perhaps indicates a need for more controls, training or resources to address it. This approach can also help you target your audits to over-looked sites or teams. Matching this data with other insights (for instance records of incidents and complaints) helps to take this to the next level.

It's easy. Chase after a difficult EMS certification which your stakeholders, customers and youngsters find value in. And do all you realistically can to get it.
