What are the most common reasons students drop out of school?

Kids don't know they are dropping out as it happens. It isn't a sudden decision. Something happens and missing some class seems like the right thing at the moment. As they miss more, school feels less and less right. It takes a lot of resilience to bounce back from those conditions.

Some of the reasons for dropping out of school include the following: (1)financial constraints- most kids are said to have dropped out of school due to failure to pay fees, buy other necessities and also failure to have important resources. (2) Long distances to the school - this is a common cause for dropping out of school for most kids in rural areas especially resettled areas where the closest school may be 15 or more km away. (3) Unconducive learning environment - some learners are believed to drop out of school because of the harsh treatment they oftentimes receive from other learners and mostly teachers. Even though corporal punishment is banned in most countries, some teachers are still doing it and it's a major drivee.

The most common reason is years and years of feeling a lack of ownership of their learning, and students finding it difficult to find a sense of resonance in school. When students are being told how to act, what to learn, listen to a teacher quietly, it eventually leads to apathy, and ultimate withdrawal. This apathy coupled with a troubled home life and lack of SEL support can be the ultimate reason to no longer attend school.

I believe poverty and challenging financial situations are the primary drivers behind student dropout rates. Many children are compelled to leave school and seek employment to support their families financially. Furthermore, students grappling with academic difficulties often feel frustrated and inadequate, leading them to discontinue their education. Such socio-economic hardships, including instances of domestic violence and psychological stress, exert a profound impact on students' engagement in school activities, ultimately contributing to dropout rates.

Most common reasons that students drop out of school is not getting the proper support that they need to excel in academic subjects. It could also be that adults who are teachers or coaches favor those students who get good grades over students who struggle and get bad grades. Most students who drop out do it because they feel alienated from the school system. The primary reason is that they don't want to have to put up with the rigorous and painful demands of high school and beyond if they are struggling academically at school. Why keep going to school if you can drop out, get a GED, and work where you can be happy? School is more of a social success than an academic one for some people. Its those people who struggle socially who drop out.

From my personal experience, I think it's important to teach kids how to learn and process knowledge early on. Furthermore, cultivate their curiosity towards learning and acquiring new ideas and concepts. In the best scenario, this process should not start in primary school but with their parents teaching. However, schools should also actively stimulate problem-solving skills and teach methodologies of processing knowledge. As a former “drop out” myself -moving to a “lower” degree school - I can tell that my academic difficulties did not come from a lack of interest, but that I was never taught how to study. Call to action: foster problem-solving and learning skills in students, and encourage genuine interest when exploring concepts.

This is where differentiation in classrooms becomes so critical. By finding ways of teaching skills and then giving students various levels of achieving mastery of said skill, teachers can focus on challenging students individually, and provide more opportunities to encourage student growth without students feeling like “failures” because they may have started further back from their learning peers.

In a large class like we have in my country Nigeria its very easy for student to drop out due to academic difficulties. The student may miss classes and this might go unnoticed since its a large class and the more classes missed the more difficult to grasp the course and this can lead to academic difficulties. Sometimes students just flow with the crowd and become uninterested in their academics thereby leading to difficulties .

Many of the reasons are that there is not a pleasant school climate. Many teachers work halfheartedly. There is also a lot of violence that goes undetected.

Financial Pressure is one of the reasons that students dropped out of school, when a student parent lost their jobs, have a serious illness or accident, or when parents separate from each other without planning for their children, make children to suffer and part of the suffering is unable to pay their school fees which can later lead to drop out. The school counselor should do a proper follow up on any student that stop coming to school to know the cost and how the school or society can be of help.

Due to financial constraints, students discontinue their K-12 education, as their families may struggle to procure essentials like food, lodging, and healthcare. Children may be compelled to labour to supplement the family's income, resulting in early withdrawal from school. Due to economic hardship, where their income is insufficient to support the family's requirements, parents may feel compelled to engage in child labour. They may perceive juvenile labour to supplement household income and ensure the family's survival in such circumstances. Furthermore, cultural, and societal elements, restricted adult employment prospects, and inadequate educational opportunities may all contribute to the perception that juvenile labour is essential.

Sometimes students had to left their higher studies to financially support their family. If they do study then also they can't give their whole time to studies and had to compromise. Things become worse when it comes to money. Although someone has money but it's not enough to pay fees and buy other necessities.

This is why equity practices are so important in our educational institutions, at all age levels. Teaching our administrative leaders how to identify potential equity learning gaps, (poverty is a profound example) and how to overcome these gaps for under privileged students is paramount to building successful learning communities. When all students feel supported, learning communities thrive.

Most students need to feel welcomed, supported, and cared about in order to be successful. Therefore, the school environment and culture matters. Students struggling with math often need additional support and resources to overcome their challenges. However, they may not receive the individual attention or specialized instruction they need. Limited access to tutors, mentors, or effective learning strategies can further exacerbate their difficulties and leave them feeling unsupported. We must solve these issues to help students graduate on time.

There are just so many reasons, but I think one that is often overlooked is that we've created a system that doesn't support them and their diverse needs. It's a system and it's often not about the student. So even if we put personal problems aside, even just in terms of academics, our schools lack the willingness to do what is needed for fear of failure and the irony is that they are failing these kids as a result. Families with the money and resources supported by a community culture of performance and a kid with no major personal problems will achieve. Everyone else is left to sink or swim with whatever they have to try with.

Some young people may face financial pressures that force them to seek ways to earn money to contribute to their family's income. Balancing this and school can be challenging, leading to exhaustion and a decline in academic performance and or putting themselves in harmful situations .

Not having a place where they thrive and feel welcome. The arts are what bring so many students to school. If they didn’t work out for you, maybe you were in the crowd that didn’t need them, but trust me…there are kids that need them.

It is commonly seen in rural areas because the govt., school, teachers or the administration never put any efforts to bring the children up or never try to develop the system.

This might be the biggest hurdle affecting high achieving districts in today’s learning world. Focusing too much on college readiness and neglecting the profound impact that career focus can have on a students understanding of the world, is a mistake educators cannot afford to make, especially with at risk learners. A struggling learner in a high achieving school district will undoubtedly drop out if they have no future ready experience. They simply will not see how they fit into the learning world if they don’t see their own future needs discussed or presented.

A negative school environment, including bullying and harassment, can create a hostile atmosphere that negatively impacts a student's well-being. Persistent bullying may lead to social isolation, declining mental health, and a desire to escape the harmful environment by dropping out.

I think we've done a disservice to students by focusing so much on college readiness and college prep. College is not for everyone, and that's ok. Our job is to prepare students for the world they're entering, NOT the world we want them to enter. Schools NEED choices for students who don't are not going to go to college - vocational classes, life skills classes, job coaching, etc.. I know there are wonderful programs out there but if we want none college bound students to graduate HS then there needs to be more, there needs to be a focus for them and it needs to be readily available. Many of the programs that do exist are only at certain locations and transportation then becomes a major hurdle for the student.

I felt this was one of the biggest reasons we saw when students didn’t finish school in the rural district I taught in. Students didn’t see the point in finishing when it wouldn’t affect their chosen path. Most of the reasons listed influence this but it is hard to convince a student who grew up in generational poverty to finish school when a job path is paying them more than what they have seen.

This! We are setting kids up to fail from the beginning. There is such a focus on what you need to do to get into college, there is no time left for what they want to DO in college. I think we need to restructure the whole system. College is not for everyone and we need to be creative and productive in other ways to learn and achieve. #justsaynotocollege

Students are not engaged. We typically focus on their “deficits” instead of their strengths. We insist upon remediating instead of accelerating. We continue to focus on seat time instead of providing viable, quality alternative scheduling. We don’t give students voice in the system in which they should be considered the priority. Said differently, the system is designed perfectly for the results we are getting.

The research is pretty clear. We lose students between Y1 and Y2 due to a lack of integration and belonging. In the last two years of a program, it tends to be finances. Men especially drop out to enter the work force fulltime between Yrs 2 and 3 and yrs 3 and 4.

Dropping out is a loaded term. For some time now in Australia schooling now runs for 13 years. This one size fits all approach which makes students and their parents feel guilty if they choose to leave school earlier has perpetuated multiple problems. Some students are MUCH better off leaving school to go into the workforce or into alternatives such as apprenticeships. This should be honoured and celebrated, and the work they do appreciated in a society where all sorts of jobs are worthwhile.

As a consultant for a HS, I worked w/students who needed to earn 1 or 2 verified credit(pass class &state exam) in math to graduate. I created a remediation program. For those who needed Algebra 1 & Geometry, I merged common concepts &extended Algebra 1 concepts to include Geometry as an application. This worked great. As math difficulties persist, students may experience frustration & feelings of helplessness. They may doubt their abilities, fearing they are not "good at math" & undermining their self-esteem. This negativity can lead to a sense of hopelessness, making them believe that success in school is unattainable. To combat this, I showed students' prior scores to ID areas of potential strength; showing how close they were.

Financial commitments in acquiring a qualitative education is one of the major reasons students drop out of school. Government at all levels should make sure Education is compulsory and free up to secondary school. Also increasing rates of unemployment after graduation from the university is not motivating the students to concentrate on their studies leading to poor academic achievements, thereby leading to withdrawal from school or lack of motivation to further their studies. Inadequate facilities to cater for students with special needs in most schools is also an important factor that leads to students dropping out of school. Unfriendly and inefficient assessments procedures in schools also truncate further studies of students.
