In my experience, it is not possible to get the adoption of XP(Extreme Programming) without clearly addressing the 'What is in it for me?' question for the engineers. Most of the practices in XP significantly improve an engineer's quality of life. For example, Test Driven Development (TDD) not only gives the ultimate confidence to the engineer before pushing their code but also reduces the likelihood of the engineer being pulled into a late-night or weekend debugging call. So, to measure the progress in XP, we need also to measure if engineers feel safer, more in control of their lives, and more willing to take risks. Without that, any sign of 'adoption' is only short-lived.
