In my opinion, during the first or even the second fund, the fund team is also largely new and discovering a lot of new things unless the GPs and some of the other members of the team have worked together earlier. So, the vision and mission statement is a bit fluid, but starts becoming more concrete by the second/third fund. Aligning the vision, mission and values helps build the investment strategy of the fund, their value proposition to portfolio companies, value-add, and is a key component of the evaluation of VC fund and their teams by LPs, especially institutional LPs that are also mission driven.

Assembling a diverse and complementary team is great, but fairly pointless if one ego or voice dominates decision making. I’ve seen many firms that would benefit from the creation of an authentic environment where all voices are empowered to say “no, I don’t think you’re right about that.” When a leader simply surrounds himself with “yes men” and “yes women,” opportunities are lost and poor decisions are often made.

The main risk of a startup is failure due to lack of cash - managing costs and keeping them as low as possible until you find product market fit is the CEO's main goal.

Often overlooked are varying socioeconomic viewpoints. It's common and convenient (particularly in venture) to recruit Ivy League talent, most of whom come from a certain background and have a certain perspective, or to check the box with someone who is brown or Black. Find and invest in talent who grew up poor or less advantaged, who overcame obstacles, and who can offer a different perspective. There is synergy when you honor - and allow to be proffered - the views and opinions of those who are qualified from their experiences.

Strength also include previous jobs and degree, you need a tax guy an accountant, a person with a strong network, a finance number cruncher, structuring specialist and a person that can get negotiate with the target. A VC deal is never easy to start with, dealing with family of owner or owner themselves are tricky and very risky. I suggest a team of experts from different fields to assure all risks are mitigated internally before making investment decision. Though you can always use other firms, accept for legal, I think they are not always looking out for your best interest at hand. That is my two cents on this matter, I hope nonine is offended. 🙏

The team should be diverse across all relevant dimensions, including, but not limited to, age, gender, culture, sector, and professional experience. Venture Capital teams are relatively smaller than most of the other financial institutions. They usually start with few friends etc. that in most cases initially lack diversity. Having diversity of thought, race, background, age, gender, etc. is key in finding edge cases that lead to power law returns for a VC. There are so many examples that VCs miss out on opportunities because they lack the needed perspective to understand an existing problem and get excited about an investment opportunity targeting that problem.

What will set you apart from other VCs is not your focus areas but the investment theses underlying your investment strategy. You need to consider major trends and how they affect specific sectors or verticals, and form a view - possibly unique - on what important changes are going to take place and on how they are going to affect start-up growth. This will indicate which sectors and types of start-ups to focus on - those able to and focused on solving real problems for a significant market. It will also help you establish investment criteria and a venture support strategy.

In addition, continuous learning and staying updated on industry trends, can drive informed decisions and help new management teams in VC to mitigate portfolio related risks.

It's important to build out a fund model that takes into account Check size, ownership targets, follow on investment strategy and recycling amongst others. This will showcase how much a company needs to be valued at to return the fund - the VC should only back companies that they believe can produce these future returns needed to satisfy the LPs.

The team needs to decide the overall approach to portfolio management including (1) degree of active/ passive, (2) whether the roles of sourcing/ execution and portfolio management will be split between team members.

The reality is that we all see the world through our own set of glasses and often we don't see the same things so listen, learn, and improve from the failures, the feedback, and the criticism.

I often see VCs not taking full advantage of a closed feedback loop, both from within the VC firm and from portfolio companies. Encouraging an open culture where team members, entrepreneurs, and co-investors can provide honest feedback is essential. This feedback should be actively sought after major decisions or investment outcomes. More importantly, there needs to be a system in place to act on this feedback, incorporating it into future strategies and decisions.

Continuous learning is key for a new management team. Feedback, sourced from mentors, peers, customers, and experts, offers constructive insights. Embracing failures—be it missed deals, bad investments, or unsuccessful exits—provides valuable lessons. If you're investing in early-stage, never expect the business model to be fully fleshed out. Engage the right technical experts (if you don't know or can't find them, walk away) and if it's not a leap forward from what's on the market or in others' pipelines, walk away. If the techical innovation is real and meaningful don't waste time diligencing the GTM. That can be figured out in due course.

Some people invest in the jockey and some invest in the horse. Often times the business model or the actual product or service will need to be tweaked. Pivoting along the way is critical to the success of most companies. As a result investing in the leadership and people can be the difference between success and failure. However, a great team with a terrible product may not create the reward you are looking for.

In its rawest form, a VC firm is a business just like any other. As such, it should be deliberately constructed to maximize the three P's in business: people, product, and process. People - team members should have complementary skillsets and clearly defined roles. Product - the fund and the companies it invests in must be attractive to customers (i.e., LPs). Process - clean and efficient internal operations that allow the business to run smoothly are a must. I encourage new management teams in a venture capital firm to build their business the same way they encourage their portfolio companies to do. Implementing effective systems and processes is the ideal way to mitigate risk especially in an industry that's built on it.
