In addition to communication skills, a crucial perspective to consider is cultural competence. Public Relations leaders must understand the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and values of their audiences, especially in a crisis situation. This involves not only being able to communicate effectively but also being sensitive to cultural nuances that may influence perceptions and responses to the crisis. With sixteen years in public relations, I've seen how important clear communication is during tough times 1. Clear talking avoids confusion. 2. Telling the truth builds trust. 3. Quick updates keep everyone in the loop. 4. Being flexible is key. 5. Showing you care matters. 6. Working well with the media ensures accurate news. In short, good communication, including with the media, is crucial for handling crisis and protecting reputation.

In my opinion, for a PR leader to effectively navigate a crisis and protect their organization's reputation, he/she must have great communication skills, legal and ethical knowledge, and empathy.

In addition to communication skills, the best crisis leaders are objective and able to see both sides of an issue so that they can craft authentic responses that address all audience concerns.

After handling multiple corporate crisis of different nature, I found the most important thing is not to panic in any crisis. Keep yourself Calm. All things will fall in place, if ur mind is calm, it allows you to think strategically.

Essential to strategic thinking is ethical integrity. PR leaders must navigate crises with honesty, transparency, and accountability, upholding ethical standards while safeguarding stakeholder trust. Integrating ethical considerations into strategic planning ensures alignment with organizational values and fosters long-term credibility and sustainability.

To think strategically and be ready. The ability to tie everything together at every stage of our PR work, your reputation-building campaigns and initiatives, is the most crucial attribute. You can only become more crisis-ready by doing that.

Having a foresight into the situation at hand and being able to navigate the teams through it with pace and peaceful means can really make PR professionals successful. Equally important is their ability to think ahead, plan for the worst possible scenarios. Always in crisis, the resolve must be the organisational agenda and nothing above it.

During a crisis, a PR head needs to be calm under pressure, possess strong communication skills to manage stakeholders effectively, demonstrate strategic thinking to navigate complex situations, exhibit transparency and honesty to maintain trust, show empathy towards those affected, be proactive in addressing issues, collaborate with internal and external teams, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and maintain a positive reputation for the organization amidst adversity.

Complementing leadership skills is the perspective of resilience and adaptability. Public Relations leaders must demonstrate resilience in navigating through the complexities and pressures of a crisis, remaining composed and focused amidst uncertainty. They should also possess adaptability, being agile in adjusting strategies and approaches as the situation evolves. By embodying resilience, PR leaders inspire confidence and stability, while adaptability enables them to effectively respond to dynamic challenges and changing stakeholder needs. These qualities enable PR leaders to lead with strength and agility, guiding their teams and stakeholders through crises with confidence and determination.

Having taught leadership transformation, media training and crisis communication programs to the C-suite client leaders, these are the critical skills a leader needs especially when under duress and facing crises - (1) Humility, (2) Authenticity, (3) Steadfastness, and (4) Courage. One of the most lacking skills in the business (or political) arena, is humility, especially the ability to simply say, "I am sorry for my mistake", instead of pointing the blame to others. Stakeholders and the public can smell a fake apology miles away, so being authentic is a must. Having steady nerves and true courage to not buckle, are the 2 other critical qualities a leader needs in these circumstances. Always tell the truth.

They understand that setbacks are part of the job and are prepared to bounce back swiftly. Additionally, having a well-thought-out crisis plan is essential.

In the face of a crisis, resilience is the cornerstone of a PR leader’s skill set. It’s the ability to withstand pressure, stress, uncertainty, adversity, adapt to change, and bounce back stronger. Over and above to maintain an optimistic attitude. Resilience skillset also demands patience and in maintaining composure when the stakes are high and the situation is highly (or could be) volatile. As a seasoned PR professional, I’ve weathered many storms, and it's resilience that has always steered me through. It’s resilience that has helped me turn setbacks into comebacks, challenges into opportunities, and grow above all difficulties. So, in my view, resilience is not just a skill, it’s the defining quality of a PR leader in a crisis.

One thing that might be more important than most others is: don't try to bullsh*t people. Don't tell them everything is fine, when it isn't. Don't dismiss the elephant in the room. Don't gaslight people that are worried. Be honest and open, acknowledge the crises WHILE taking a clear leadership position, spreading genuine confidence that things will get resolved and that there is an actual plan or that you are working on it and are confident to resolve everything. This altitude of negating a crisis or playing it down doesn't sit well with people anymore. They feel it, when someone who should take the responsibility and lead to maneuver the ship instead spreads dishonest platitudes of encouragement.

During a crisis a PR leader needs to: -- Remind people of the details of the crisis response plan when they don't remember. -- Balance the need to be careful with the need for calm. -- To know what really matters and what can be dispensed with. -- And to anticipate how an excited or stressed-out audience and world will react differently than they would during normal circumstances.
