What resources do IT Operations teams need to respond to a security incident?

Invest in robust cybersecurity tools such as intrusion detection systems (IDS), endpoint protection platforms (EPP), security information and event management (SIEM) systems, and incident response platforms. These tools enable real-time monitoring, threat detection, and rapid incident response.

Knowledge and planning are key. I would prepare by prioritizing: 1. ITSM toolsets (eg: Remedy and ServiceNow) allow for different incident 'types'. These include IT security tickets. These tickets can be setup to control who has read/write access allowing finite access to select teams/individuals to potentially sensitive information. These should be used for all IT security incidents logged in the ITSM tool. 2. Knowledge articles may capture guidance to identify a potential security incident, as well as tasks and actions for 1st line, application and support teams in the event of positive confirmation of a security incident. Knowledge articles and accompanying processes should exist for differing incident scenario types or triggers

Establish comprehensive incident response policies and procedures outlining roles, responsibilities, escalation paths, and communication protocols. Develop incident response plans tailored to different types of security incidents, including steps for containment, eradication, recovery, and post-incident analysis.

Equip IT teams with specialized skills and training in incident response, digital forensics, malware analysis, and threat intelligence. Provide regular training sessions, tabletop exercises, and simulations to ensure readiness and proficiency in responding to security incidents effectively.
