Let’s reflect on loneliness, a growing concern in today’s society. As social beings, our need for connection is fundamental, yet many feel increasingly isolated. Measuring the impact of initiatives to combat loneliness is vital. Here are three key indicators: 1. Social Connection Metrics: Assess the quality and frequency of social interactions through surveys 2. Mental Health Assessments: Use tools like the UCLA Loneliness Scale to quantify loneliness levels and highlight the need for mental health support 3. There is a difference between Outcomes and Impact. Outcomes are immediate changes from interventions, like more people joining reading classes after a literacy campaign. Impact is the deeper, long-term effect, such as improved community literacy rates. However, impacts can have diverse causes; for instance, low-cost de-worming programs in Africa significantly boosted children's literacy by reducing sickness, enabling higher school attendance, showing a more indirect but profound impact on education compared to direct literacy campaigns.

Each area in the social sector will have its indicators and metrics. It is critical to understand what your stakeholders care about so you have a chance to measure these indicators and metrics. I work in the social sector within the senior community in Singapore and some stakeholders demand to know how many people we serve, the average cost of serving, etc. These outputs are often a function of what they will need to report to the bosses and how this information can be used for narrative for a wider audience. Nothing wrong with this especially if they are your funders. Other stakeholders will care about the actual outcome and impact of our intervention programs.

For emergency response projects, metrics could include number of emergencies dispatched, reduction in response times to emergencies and increase in public safety through improved emergency services. For mapping projects, metrics could include increase in accessible mapped areas for underrepresented regions, number of active volunteers contributing to mapping efforts, enhancement of local capacities for disaster response and management through accurate maps, number of local entities (e.g., governments, NGOs) utilising the maps for planning and response and improvement in disaster preparedness.

Examples of social impact indicators include: Health: Reduction in disease rates, improved access to healthcare, life expectancy increases. Education: Graduation rates, literacy improvement, access to education for marginalized groups. Economic: Job creation, income growth for low-income families, financial literacy improvements. Environment: Reduction in carbon emissions, improved water quality, percentage of waste recycled. Tracking these can provide tangible evidence of the value your initiatives bring to society.

To improve your social impact metrics, continuously collect data and refine the indicators based on feedback and outcomes. Set specific, time-bound targets to measure progress. Engage stakeholders regularly to ensure the metrics remain relevant and reflective of real needs. Leverage technology, such as data analytics and AI tools, to gather deeper insights. Also, benchmark your metrics against industry standards to ensure your organization is performing at its best and driving meaningful social change.

Use approaches that combined both quantitative and qualitative data - both “numbers and narrative” - to assess the impact of your social enterprise. The sooner you are able to mix and assess these the better, as your social enterprise scales over time. Action research approaches are key to this as they enable you to run the business whilst measuring and learning from impacts created to improve in future.
