At the onset of my professional journey, I was part of an initiative that shaped my perspective on educational outreach and student engagement. Our approach was hands-on and personal: we visited high schools, meeting with juniors and seniors in assembly-style gatherings. These visits were opportunities to inspire and educate young minds about the possibilities college could offer them. Each visit was planned to ensure maximum impact. These assemblies were designed to be interactive, allowing for a two-way exchange of ideas and questions. We showcased our programs, highlighting the diverse academic and extracurricular opportunities we offered. We geared our visits to urban areas where students may not have thought that college was an option.

I am excited to share my perspective as it has been tried and true proven for several decades, yet remains unused to large degree. We should consider incorporating an assessment of non-cognitive variables as a holistic measure of the applicant. This is the "grit" factor. We all know that high school GPAs are not level with each other and while there are ways to "normalize" this, an additional consideration should be assessing one's ability to persevere in the face of adversity. There are some highly selective programs with capacities and this can be an additional measure to determine admissibility.
