General activity — manipulation of files and data, launched applications, connected USB devices.

Another is to analyze users' actions over time to see if there are any unexpected changes in behavior, like accessing files they normally wouldn't touch. It's also important to educate employees about cybersecurity and only give them access to the files and systems they need for their jobs. Regular checks on security systems and actively looking for any possible threats can also help stop insider attacks before they happen.

Let's step outside the usual tech-heavy solutions. Think behavior. Unusual login times, downloading massive files, grumpy attitude shifts – these can be red flags. Train employees to spot these and have a clear reporting system in place. Tech-wise, get granular! Least-privilege access means giving folks only the access they absolutely need to do their jobs. Monitor network activity for anomalies – that odd spike in data leaving the building could be a data heist in progress. Finally, don't ignore disgruntled employees. Offer resources, address grievances. A happy worker is less likely to turn rogue.

I have discovered that using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) is one of the most inventive techniques to detecting and avoiding insider threats. Back in 2016 or so, to detect insider threats I would need to run a program with several technologies: Fireeye, Tanium, Darktrace etc and inputting data into SIEM. Now in 2023, we're experimenting with Copilot (!) through the integration with Sentinel and Defender. Caveat we move pretty much the whole IT estate to O365.

To move to Data-Centric Security, a company needs to have a solid foundation of data classification. Very easy to jump straight to auto-labelling which Microsoft was really pushing as a feature of their E5 licences. However, it didn't work in an IT estate where it was complicated (e.g. a mix of on-prem and thin clients). The PoC was scrapped.

Fortunately, the market now offers various simulation tools designed to recreate attack scenarios, enabling the identification of vulnerable users and gaps in security protocols. By leveraging these tools, organizations can pinpoint areas for improvement and enhance user awareness effectively.

A typical example is HR employees sending remuneration information outside of the corporate. In my experience (and to be compliant with work councils and all the privacy laws), make sure that you do awareness, education, before escalating to "hall of fame" and "hall of shame". It takes a while, but in the end "what gets measure gets done".

One thing I found helpful was determining the difference between what we were good at as a security organization and what we were not good at and asking ourselves if it was better to build missing capability internally or consider outsourcing it instead. A Security Operation Center (SOC) is a good example of something that may be a candidate for outsourcing if that capability is not already present and effective.

Insider attacks are a serious concern. It's more important to detect before prevent. Besides, the measures mentioned above, one effective way to discover insider attackers is by using a Network Detection & Response tool. However, it is not enough to simply deploy & analyze such a tool – it is crucial to establish a metric for measuring its effectiveness. For example, monitoring network traffic events when critical resources/devices/assets are accessed, or detecting when service accounts elevate privileges. The metric should constantly evolve to stay effective. As a cybersecurity professional, I believe integrating this technology with SIEM/SOAR to enable centralized monitoring would be an effective control for detecting insider attacks.

Insider threats will always be the greatest security concern for any company in any industry because it's the one threat that is truly unstoppable if someone is bent on carrying out a malicious event. In my opinion, a company can have every administrative, technical, & physical control there is and a motivated inside threat actor will find ways to bypass the controls. An area that wasn't pointed out in the comments that many times will help prevent insider threat is the organization's culture. People who feel welcomed and consider themselves part of the team develop loyalty to the business. Loyal employees who feel cared for do not usually go out of their way to negatively impact the company they work for. TLDR: Care for your team mates.

Many organizations employ poor manual processes for the management of user privileges. With plenitude systems and applications to manage, a lack of centralized control, highly manual processes, and an unclear understanding of the necessary access required for each role, managing user privileges is inadequate. One way to address this is to automate the provisioning of the user lifecycle. Another strategy is the implementation of PBAC. This means having solid, well-defined policies and knowing which access privileges each role requires. As organizations grow and evolve, the right IGA solution can allow for more efficient changes and decrease risk by focusing on policies and assignments rather than roles.

The practice of building out our perimeter and making it taller and wider to keep the threat actors out is a requirement still today, but with the total overall threat landscape evolving and changing how it has....the wall nor legacy tools are enough. To have a solid Insider Risk Mgmt program, companies need to have a NextGen Human Focus platform in place. These IRM platforms don't need to wait for a trigger/compromise to alert because they understand human behaviors and their interaction with data, machines, apps & other humans. As a result, near real time high fidelity alerts are provided with little to no false positives; we need to know when there is malicious InT activity happening while it is in the act of...too late otherwise.

A lot of times there isn't a full segmentation of the network from externally managed devices. Physical access to the onsite infrastructure should be completely segmented away. This is where micro segmentation of the environment really needs to be considered. With things such as coffee machines that will re-order the coffee for you, these types of devices provide an attack surface that is not thought about because it flies really below the radar. Egress points for appliances that report out are also ingress points for attackers.
