First we have to create a project checklist to identify what all changes need to be included under code refactoring to achieve uniformity for the entire code base. The list can include concepts like naming conventions, minimum code coverage needed,breaking down of large and complex functions, classes and other components, architectural changes etc. Start with the smallest module and test your changes thoroughly to make sure none of the existing flows are affected.

Object Oriented Programming (OOP) principles should be known to both, testers and programmers, of the code Both testers and programmers should know the principle of the Structural Programming (I'd recommend Deijstra's book "Structural Programming".

Refactoring is one of the most important skills for what I call incrementalism, which makes you reach your targets quickly and incrementally. If you are traveling, refactoring is like an upfront price to smooth out the road ahead so you get a bigger discount for the whole trip and make it cheaper. Move a function to its own class, split a function to a few more meaningful ones, rename a variable, apply a design pattern (e.g. Facade) and... as the refactoring stage of your development while maintaining integrity and it will make you go much faster to implement that new feature. One good book that I suggest everyone read, that is often not mentioned, is "Code Complete 2" by Steve McConnell. It is an older book but time tested. It has taught me a lot about refactoring and goes in depth on all facets of understanding code from basic control structures to temporal coupling etc. It is rather easy to read and sits on my book shelf as a quick refresher.

Look into Uncle Bob’s (yes, that is his name) “Clean Code” live courses and book. This helped me understand refactoring code (and also writing readable, clean code up front which makes refactoring easier and more enjoyable).
