You have a boss who doesn't take criticism well. How can you help them improve?

Selecting the right time and place is crucial when giving feedback to your boss. Aim for a private, tranquil setting when they're not preoccupied or stressed. Consider asking if they're open to feedback, and potentially scheduling a meeting, to ensure the discussion is respectful and productive.

Asking if it's ok to provide feedback is an honest and heartfelt way of doing so. More often than not we're not privy to our bosses workload, which caaan be their own fault, and asking for a proper time to talk we're showing care and respect, which can/should be seen as a virtue and will increase the odds of a successfull talk.

Analysing people is an important thing and there are people who don't like to be lectured. So one needs to find the right time and place to suggest, advise or provide feedback to their boss in order to avoid him taking it otherwise.

When providing feedback to your boss, concentrate on facts and shared goals. Avoid personal or emotional comments, and support your points with specific examples and evidence. Use the framework SARA would help you on that process. Relate your feedback to collective objectives, demonstrating your intention to enhance outcomes rather than criticize.

Tip: If something happens, make sure to note it down and then drill right down to facts and actions. It is ok to say how feelings were hurt, but do make sure to dig into the why to make sure that it's understood. Also, writing some sort of short script will also help out a lot, as you can read and even ask a trusty colleague to review it for you to make sure that the feedback is backed up by data and a shared goal.

Use positive, constructive language for feedback to your boss, avoiding harsh or vague terms. Opt for clear, respectful words, balancing critiques with praise. This builds rapport and trust, making them more open to your insights.

Communicating at right place and time is very important and this makes difference. And constructive language also plays key role when trying to feedback.

Just be careful with the positive approach here. Every person takes feedback differently, so if you have a boss who doesn't like to mince words then it's probably better to simply stick to facts, data and clearness, without being disrespectful of course. A lot of people, myself included, dislike the sandwich approach, so try to investigate your audience before doing so.

Invite your boss to share their thoughts when offering feedback, avoiding imposing your views. Listen actively, empathize, and validate their perspective to foster dialogue and collaboration, making them feel valued and respected.

Offer your boss concrete, feasible suggestions for improvement in your feedback. Ensure these steps are practical and align with their strengths and resources, helping them formulate a plan for positive change.

If it is highly difficult or sensitive to book time and talk directly with the managers, just coming to step 5: Giving your proposal 4: Ask for their idea 6: Support the manager It may difficult to help them to improve their characteristics, but help the work done maybe easier.

If all of the above fails and you're working at a company that values it's employees, then try to talk it out with a higher up or HR to try and find some solutions. In my experience, I've seen it working really well and also not. It really depends of where you're working.
