Sustainability is a wide field to specialize in. Are you designing systems? Are you engineering products? Do you perform marketing and communications tasks? You don't have to learn a new skillset per se. You can adapt your existing skills to a sustainability context.

"Sustainability" is a buzzword in today's management landscape, with shifting interests. It's important to understand why you want to delve into this area: is it because it's trending and you want a job, or because you're genuinely passionate about sustainability? Once you're clear on your motivation, identify where you're likely to thrive. Trends may fade in 5-10 years, but your passion won't. Chart your career path based on the tenure you envision in this field, and connect with someone in a similar profile to see if it aligns with your objectives

Educating people about sustainability in all industries is challenging because the topic is complex and involves a multitude of different issues. Plus, with a diverse audience ranging from workers to bosses, perspectives vary widely. Further complicating matters, EU laws on sustainability are stringent and universally applicable, necessitating clear communication about legal requirements alongside the broader benefits of sustainability. This demands distilling complex concepts into more accessible terms and making them compelling and relevant to everyone.

I start with a few research questions I want the answer to. Who are the biggest voices in sustainability? Who are the unsung hero’s? How are these players demonstrating impact (do they have measures they are reporting, investments, etc.)? Once you start to build your knowledge of who’s in the space, start attending events or webinars, connect with people who work in those companies on LinkedIn, and learn more about the markets they serve. Finally, I also decided to volunteer my time within my last company to support our sustainability team. It gave me an up close and personal understanding of what was driving the team, and I learned unsurprisingly, our goal was to enable our customers to be sustainable through our technology.

Sustainability is a HUGE field. Narrow down what aspect you want to go into: you can work in anything from wastewater engineering to carbon accounting to education to advocacy, and more!

Second, start reading the literature. It’ll be overwhelming at first, but you’ll soon start to pick up on the terminology and the areas you gravitate towards. Finally, if you can participate in either a volunteer effort or project or a career accelerator/fellowship program, these are great opportunities to get more hands on experience paired with networking.
