Your project team is losing steam. What can you do to keep them motivated?

My approach emphasizes transparency to motivate my team while making sure individual incentives are aligned with the overall goals of the firm. For example, if we're behind on our quarterly goal after the first month, sharing this information transparently allows A-players to step up to the plate and help make up the difference. Transparency is effective only if the team is aligned with our goals. To ensure alignment, it's crucial to communicate the vision clearly and demonstrate how it benefits each team member personally, whether through bonuses, promotions, or other incentives.

I am a firm believer in engaging in non-judgmental, active listening. I know this will help build trust with employees and alleviate some of the negative feelings held toward work. Having one-on-one with employees can create an environment where employees have an opportunity to being heard and feeling understood. This can have the effect of releasing a pressure valve and can cause negative emotions to lift a bit. Sometimes, this can be enough for employees to become re-engaged with their tasks. Following the conversation, I normally take the employee’s concerns and consider how or if they can be addressed.

SMART goals can be done very effectively in team environments, if they are shared. In most scenarios, I recommend that the leader communication the "what" and the "why" to the team. Then, ask team members to come up with 2-3 alternatives for the "how". After that, the "when" is usually the trickiest part of the discussion. Business likes to move fast - sometimes unrealistically fast - so the discussion of SMART goals is the best way to bring the collective knowledge of the team in, to determine the right balance of timing, process and quality. You simply can't do this effectively without engaging the whole team.

When team members are given a task in any project, including all the authority and responsibility of that task, they start to feel themselves as a leading and important part of the project. As a result, this raises the mood of the team and builds self-confidence. It should be noted that authority and responsibility do not end the work, but at the same time, it is inevitable to provide appropriate resources.

To revive a demotivated project team, effective communication is crucial, encouraging open discussions and addressing concerns. Clear and achievable goals should be set, breaking down tasks into manageable milestones. Recognition of achievements, no matter how small, fosters motivation and positivity. Empowering team members by assigning tasks based on their strengths enhances ownership and responsibility. Introducing variety and creativity prevents monotony and keeps the work engaging. Addressing external factors such as conflicts or workload issues is essential for sustained motivation. Team-building activities strengthens interpersonal connections. Celebrating successes and milestones contributes to a sense of accomplishment and morale.
