To understand the issues, you need a collaborative culture where everyone feels comfortable sharing and other REALLY listen, not just wait to have your say. Specifically: 1) For the meeting(s) discussing solutions, have a facilitator who just facilitates (i.e. does not take part of the conversation so they can remain unbiased). 2) Be clear about the rules of the conversation and have the facilitator kindly, but firmly keep the group to this. 3) Read up, and do your best to understand the following skills of the human dynamics of effective teams: 3a) Psychological safety and how to create and maintain it. 3b) Respect - a GREAT book on the subject is "The Anatomy of Peace". 3c) "The Responsibility Process" by Christopher Avery.

2 Define Objectives

Once you've understood the issues, it's time to define clear, shared objectives for the system integration. What are the project's main goals? What functionality and performance are required from the integrated system? Errr... Yes. The objectives are one way to go about it. However, they are necessary but NOT sufficient. All too often, design comparisons are subjective and people fall in love with their designs. Here are 3 rules that every developer and architect could agree upon: 1) Duplication. The root of all evil (in software maintenance and technical debt). This is countable and measurable. 2) Coupling. You can actually count the dependencies created. Coupling - bad. 3) Cohesion. Does the design do only one thing? This is also countable. There is a consensus amongst software engineers and architects on these three points. These, in addition to above get us to sufficiency.

With a clear understanding of the issues and defined objectives, encourage your team to collaboratively explore all possible integration approaches. This includes discussing the pros and cons of each method, considering both short-term and long-term implications. It's important to foster a creative and innovative environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas without fear of criticism.
