Often scepticism is rooted in bad experiences. Excercises are chosen top down and without having a clear goal in mind or it is simply going to dinner, hoping this would foster better team dynamics.
Suggestions:
- do a quick note and vote on the challenges you want to overcome or the goal you want to achieve
- let the team contribute (anonymously) ideas on how they might solve the challenge / reach the goal
- let them contribute and vote on possible exercises
Being open to the ideas of the team might already break the barrier: It is empowering and makes everyone feel heard, thus proving the point and power of team building exercises.

To convince a skeptical team about the benefits of team-building exercises, I’d explain how these activities help improve communication, trust, and collaboration. I’d share real examples or success stories from other teams to show how effective they can be. I’d also involve the team in choosing or creating activities that feel relevant and enjoyable, making them more likely to see the value. Starting with small, practical exercises that directly benefit our work can help the team experience the positive impact, making them more open to future team-building efforts.
