One thing that I have seen to promote positive culture is weekly communications from the upper levels of the company, CEO/COO to ensure that the upper suite is engaged with the boots on the ground team members. These engagement activities go a long way to promote positive culture.

Respect and recognition should also be given directly, in person if possible, to those you are celebrating. The in person feedback creates camaraderie, respect, and recognition and is often perceived as honest and genuine. Then taking the time then to recognize someone on an engagement platform not only solidifies the message of appreciation, but also creates a forum where others can join in on the praise. The more employees participate, the more those celebrated actions can turn into longer term impacts such as cultural or behavioral shifts in an entire team or organization.

Employee Engagement Surveys can be a wonderful tool to improve morale if management truly listens to the employees. They can be used to fix tactical level issues and help identify systemic problems in organizations of all sizes.

No platforms, just bring back humanity, empathy and truth. Listen to understand rather than forming of your answer.

In-person is ALWAYS the right engagement platform. Sure, electronic means can gather data much faster, but actually being there, you can read body language & tell when someone's holding back. Always choose the honest opinion - even if it's unpalatable - over "that's what I want to hear". Being visible makes it easier to believe you care. Relying on computers to do stuff does not.

Foreman morning meeting are a good way to engage, both directly with questions, or indirectly via the general atmosphere. Also by leveraging other methods such as confidential surveys or project confidential feedback cards, which may allow for issues to be raised safely. Regardless, any engagement by leadership, be it onsite or corporate, needs to be meaningful, which may mean simply if there’s an issue, either deal with it, or communicate to the team why you can’t or won’t. This often isn’t easy or straightforward, but clear communication is key either way

Years ago, engaged employees may have gone by names such as “high potentials” or “movers and shakers.” Whatever name they go by, leaders know them by their can-do attitudes and their outstanding results.

Morale is incredibly important in building a successful team and for their personal growth and achievements to reach their potential. Depending on the industry, team competitions, team building, events and/or celebrations for milestones or targets can all be effective. The most important part about leading is understanding what individuals need to be motivated. The first step is always to get to know your employees to understand their motivation. Once you’ve spent the time and effort, the rest is easy.

If I'm looking for more engagement the last thing I'm using is software. An engaged workforce is one who is connected, they feel a part of a team and vital cog of the greater vision. Throwing software at a disconnected/disengaged workforce will only serve to perpetuate the issue. Open in-person lines of communication with leaders, collate ideas but most importantly action some of the suggestions the workforce puts up.

Often engagement forums a corporate or feel good box ticking forum. Good morale comes from being respected, having a balance of what is being asked of you and using your potential or ability, and feeling you are contributing or making a difference. While engagement forums can help with this, they are not the only way.
