A very commonplace occurrence if you have ever worked in the V.C space. How to handle this ? I suggest the following : Understanding the Terrain 🗺️ Who are the parties involved? 👥👥👥 Define the conflict: What are the opposing interests? ⚖️ Analyze the impact: How does the conflict affect each party? 🤔 Building Bridges 🤝 Open communication: Talk openly and honestly with all parties. 🗣️ Empathy: Understand the perspective of each stakeholder. ❤️ Mediation: If needed, involve a neutral third party. Strategic Maneuvering 🎯 Prioritize interests: Determine the most important interests for each party. 📈📉 Create win-win solutions: Find outcomes that benefit everyone involved. 🤝

Abdicating to data is a cop out . Selective data collection and interpretation simply cloaks the bias in fake ‘objectivity’ Before you start collecting data recognize the bias and plan your research.

To be able to help in any investment scenario, transparency must be present, which means sharing the good, the bad and the ugly. Together you get through all of this and end up with more good than bad.

Create an environment where all stakeholders feel safe to speak up. Encourage honest communication, even when opinions differ. Listen actively to understand different viewpoints. Use open-ended questions to draw out concerns and ideas. Foster a culture where constructive disagreement is valued.

If you take a board seat, your legal obligations are to the startup. Period. Your alliance is with the founders, your return should only be a result of your participation in their success, not because you prioritized your fund over their best interest.

Don't hesitate to consult mentors or industry experts. Be open to external perspectives that challenge your thinking. Use advisory boards or peer networks for complex issues. Seeking advice shows strength, not weakness. Different viewpoints can lead to more robust solutions.

Work towards aligning the interests of all parties involved. Identify common goals and find ways to create win-win situations. By focusing on shared objectives, you can reduce conflicts and build a cooperative environment. Aligning interests ensures that everyone feels their needs and concerns are being addressed, leading to more harmonious and productive relationships.

Alignment is the key to shared success. The great aligning force is financial gain. Surely we can all agree on that? Sometimes management can't; read the classic HBR article, "The Founder's Dilemma," to understand operators who would rather be king/queen than be rich. You can't work with these people, only for them. These managers need to be replaced or the company will never realize its potential. Some financial investors may differ in terms of timeline. A family office may have a long time horizon, whereas a small VC late in their cycle may have LP pressure to realize exits. This can lead to misalignment. Best to discuss it up front.

That is my number one business rule - there need to be alignment of interest. My favorite story here is a company where the management needs to invest 70% of their wealth. Once that is done a lot of inefficiencies go away because everyone is 100% aligned on the outcome.
