Facing a top candidate's job offer rejection I will say was normal and couldn't be avoided, most of it I always reflected on their decisions with respect and appreciation during the process they already collaborated on so far.

Having a top candidate reject an offer is not too strange. However, whenever it happens, It calls for a reflection on the whole scenario and the entire process starting from the advert to the stage of the offer. Perhaps, we have missed it somewhere, or the process has become faulty or outdated. Once we clear out the internal issues identified, it is always advisable to contact the candidate for one on one discussion on a much more familiar ground. In most cases, we win back the candidate. On the other hand, the feedback from the candidate if well evaluated could reveal a mismatch of candidate for the position. Sometimes we realized that the candidate could never have been the best fit for the role though he seemed to be the top candidate.

Offer Rejection is very common in hiring process, One needs to be calm and professional. It would be great idea to take feedback from the candidate on rejection which can help improve future sourcing and hiring process. Maintain good relation with the candidate for future collaboration and company branding.

While this is always a difficult situation, it never stops being a learning experience. Reflect on the entire process before proceeding: -What went wrong and could it have been prevented? -What clues could have alerted you to the situation earlier? -What can you change the next time around to avoid it happening again? -Can anything be done to salvage the relationship/offer?

During gathering the feedback, I'm always asked their reason why declined the offer and prefer to other competitors also tried for the last time and told them like such as "is there anything we can do" to change their mind and keep stayed with us. Whatever the results, from those things we learned a lot from them by their input, reactions, suggestion, and criticism in the positive way.

Most of it the way I did is keep the engagement with them by asking the referrals from their colleagues, family, or someone they know who looking for job opportunities. Keep in mind this engagement will be great in the future and make our link wider until people find us when they looking for a job.

Receiving feedback and specifically the reasons of rejection and why another employer was preferred over you is important. Get to know your competition. Ask the candidate if it's ok to follow up in a few months and see how they are going. The candidate may be happy where they are and that's ok. It's good to keep in touch and build relationships and you can get more insights on what attracted and retained them where they are. If unhappy they will let you know and you have a qualified candidate ready for your next suitable opening. It's also important to talk to your successful candidates and find out what their experience was like, why they accepted so you can reinforce and leverage your strengths in future hires.
