You should always try to understand the problem at hand as well as possible, but sometimes tough software engineering problems are tough for the very reason that there is a lack of information. It may be impossible to understand the problem well enough before the work commences. If this is the case, taking a step back and figuring out how the problem understanding can best be developed may help. Very briefly: Identify the key stakeholders and empower them to help guide the process. Engage with stakeholders regularly to adjust the project trajectory as needed. Write down what is known and what is not, then identify the important unknowns and develop plans to resolve them. This kind of problem is well suited to an agile approach.

In addition to chatGPT tips, especially in case of some debugging task or firefighting an issue, I would say, it is a teamwork, reach out to people, be selfish in asking for help, you might not get all help as others are busy too. Parallelize reaching out e.g. reach out to a teammate, to a friend and to a vendor or third-party engineer whose HW/SW you are using. Many times in SW engineering work, an external view of your code shows you something that you were not able to see, it happens. Try to come up with various ways of testing to reproduce the bug or test a fix, use first principles. You would need to strategize on how to divide the problem in different parts, and also how to come up with various hypothesis to test and find root cause.

Break down the problem into smaller, manageable tasks. Prioritize them based on impact and dependencies. Research existing solutions and gather requirements. Design a flexible architecture. Implement iteratively, testing each component thoroughly. Collaborate with team members for feedback. Document the process and code for future reference. Iterate based on feedback and continuously improve

If you dive in without a plan, folding randomly, you'll likely end up with a crumpled mess. Similarly, tackling a big problem in software engineering without breaking it down can lead to frustration and failure. Instead, take it step by step. Start by jotting down the different parts of the problem, just like planning the components of the paper plane. Then, methodically tackle each part, folding and shaping it with care. This systematic approach, breaking down the problem into manageable steps, is the key to success in both building a paper plane and solving complex software issues.

Break the problem down into smaller and smaller pieces until you have a collection of small problems you know how to solve. You don't need to know how to solve every problem to get started. You will learn more as you go and some of the solutions will change. The important thing is map out how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Sometimes a road will be closed or be a dead end. Having the map will help you adjust en route. A more junior engineer may need to break a problem down into smaller chunks than a more senior engineer. That's fine and simply reflects different levels of experience. Don't be afraid to get pedantic if it helps you think clearly. And don't be afraid to engage your more senior peers for advice.
