There are numerous problem solving frameworks available like the 5 Whys, Six Sigma DMAIC etc. which can help you apply their techniques to cybersecurity. Remember that problem solving is a skill that develops over time and the root cause is not always technical in nature !

Researching can be a pain in the backside to do, especially when you're not 100% sure of the problem to begin with! Don't shy away from using CoPilot/ChatGPT to do your initial research to break the topic down into managable chunks before you go further - see it as a personal assistant that removes the noise...

The research phase starts when a problem is suspected or confirmed. This includes observing cyber incident best practices, building upon proactive activities such as monitoring industry reports related to the items on the SBOM (hardware, software, etc.). If a baseline has been created during "peacetime" (as recommended), it will be much easier to pinpoint changes, and either discover that they are legitimate (higher headcount, new software addition that increases system/network load, etc.), or illegitimate (unsanctioned connection requests, data exfiltration, running malware, etc.). Testing the solution is a great way to know if solutions found is optimal. This is where using a virtual machine comes into place. You wouldn't want to test the solution on production. You don't want the solution you are testing break what's already there. So yeah Test the Solution securely 😌

By tackling diverse challenges, from basic to advanced levels, learners enhance their practical problem-solving skills, gain hands-on experience with tools and techniques, and understand how to counteract various cyber threats effectively. This practical exposure prepares individuals for real-world cybersecurity challenges. Would highly recommend.

The only way to get better is by PRACTICING. This skillset will not only make you a better cybersecurity analyst, but it will make your team more better as well. Putting the finishing touches together and applying it in the real-world will allow you to see where you & your fellow colleagues have grown & where improvements need to be made.

IMO, problem-solving is a multi-dimensional skill in the sense that you are required to do various types of thinking. These are 1. Analytical - initial assessment and evaluation 2. Technical - domain/topic specific SME like knowledge. This requires continuous learning. 3. Creative - thinking out-of-the-box. Dare yourself. 4. Critical - think and assess wholistically. Of course, none of these are complete without a good collaboration and effective communication 😊 #DTalks

Cybersecurity should be approached by practitioners by also observing game theory, risk management, and critical thinking principles, in addition to relying on technical skills. Time should be allocated and dedicated to monitoring industry news - keeping oneself informed about publicized attacks and exploits is very valuable, as it dispels false security illusions ("can't happen to us"), and sheds light on the high percentage of "simple yet impactful" attacks, which could have easily prevented by either timely patching software and appliances, and by baking proper cybersecurity into implemented software and solutions from the ground-up, rather than considering it an inconvenient add-on. Bottom line: cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.

Learn how to "break things down." Learn how to build, read, and comprehend logic flow. If you understand the operations of things, by process, you can detect where the break down in process is. Even if it's technically beyond your capability to "fix" the issue, being able to detect "This is where it's happening" and hypothesising what the root cause is will help solve a lot of problems.

Learn methodologies from your peers and from educational sources. Test them, find the ones that work for you and continue to iterate and learn so as to not become stale.

Practice, Practice, Practice. You should start by educating yourself on what some common threats are. Once you know what you need to practice, look for labs that focus on these threats. Some good places to look are youtube and github. Problem solving skills will become second nature if you put in enough practice.
