You're a person. You're probably not a brand. The whole "personal brand" thing has gotten carried away. I've had jobs reject me because they thought my personal brand was so strong that I'd focus on that over doing their job. Not true, but that sucked. Just be you. You don't have to be a "brand." Answer interview questions well. Show you can do the job. I think in late 2024, that's mostly it.

You just need to be YOU. In today’s workplace, there are people just like you that can do the same job as you. Supply is rampant. Energy is how you stand out. You are yourself. You are comfortable in your own skin. People feel it and want to be around it. That’s how job’s are won.

Share Stories Related To Your Brand: Using stories is an effective method for presenting your brand. Rather than just listing your professional accomplishments, use personal anecdotes to demonstrate your achievements and experiences. Share stories that illustrate your leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.

Show us who you are! Quit playing pretend and the imitation game. You'll get caught out eventually and the trust will be broken. Whatever story that is playing through your noggin' "What if I'm not good enough? What if they don't like me? What if I'm not qualified enough?" Stop that noise now. It's not helpful. Turn that "What if" around to be positive instead. What if I AM good enough? What if they DO like me? What if I AM qualified enough? That's way more powerful don't you agree? What if they don't agree Jen? 😉 What if they do and if they don't....they'll keep scrolling 🤷♀️

So many people struggle with defining their personal brand. I encourage them to keep it short and simple. It needs to be 30-45 seconds with a distinct focus: 1) who you are a professional, 2) give an example of one thing you do really well (that relates to this job), 3) tell them why you are a great fit for them or why you want to work there. Give them just enough information that they need to ask you questions to learn more. And practice, practice, practice. Record yourself so you can see what you look like and hear what you sound like. Cut out the "ums, ahs, well, okay, you know, etc." The more you practice the more natural it becomes.
