If buyers aren’t trained to give creative and constructive feedback, it can often result in “I don’t like it” or “I’m not sure”. This can undermine you as a designer yet it’s often the insecurity of the person giving the feedback that creates this un-constructive reply ie they can’t articulate why. ❌ Don’t try to guess what they are thinking! ✅ Try this. Reflect back to them exactly what they said but as a question “You don’t like it?” or “you’re not sure?”and then go silent. ‼️ Do not speak!! 🙊 Use the silence to allow them to think and naturally open up what they don’t like/what they are unsure about in your fashion design suggestion. Silence is a powerful tool in communication.

To ensure you receive constructive feedback on your fashion design revisions, approach the process with clarity and openness. Start by presenting your designs with detailed explanations of your vision and choices. Ask specific questions about aspects you're uncertain about, such as color, fit, or fabric. Encourage honest opinions by fostering an environment of trust and respect. Offer a structured format for feedback, like a questionnaire or a focused discussion, to guide the conversation. This approach not only makes it easier for clients to provide valuable insights but also demonstrates your commitment to refining and improving your designs based on their input.

Try to avoid at all cost the worst feedback in the world which is the blunt "I don't like it" with no context or concrete explanation. What I usually do is that from the get go I foster an ambient in which clients are expected to give feedback on all aspects of the work on a regular basis. This kind of trains your clients to give feedbacks. After this, if you still get this good old "I don't like it" ask as many questions as possible to understand where the feedback is stemming from and be able to create a roadmap for the changes to make.

Fashion ecommerce shoppers are not so great at giving constructive feedback to designers through customer reviews. However, you can identify common trends across a multitude of customer reviews, through qualitative and quantitative analyses. With Fashion Data Analytics solutions like Woven Insights and BrandWatch, fashion designers can easily identify trends in customer preferences around price, fit, aesthetics, material, functionality, and more; with AI-powered analysis of reviews from real fashion shoppers. This saves a whole lot of time.
