You're trying to impress a tech startup recruiter with your cover letter. How do you craft it to stand out?

Your cover letter tells a company what your resume itself can't. Here are 3 things of them: 1. Show the company that you don't just want A job, but you want THIS job with THEM, and articulate WHY (are you a current or past customer? Does what they do related to your personal or professional passions?) 2. 'Demonstrate' that you can do the job (well). Reference specific examples (in words) of where you have applied the exact experience, skills, knowledge, etc, that the job description asks for. (They won't assume anything.) 3. (BONUS) Have a followup strategy! It's easy to get lost in the application 'black hole', regardless of your qualifications. Plus, it shows your genuine interest, work ethic + resourcefulness. The best cover letters start by sharing a connection story, what is it that makes you feel connected to the company? what do they do that inspires you to want to work for them? If you can answer these questions then you have the beginnings of a great cover letter.

1. Personalize the cover letter by mentioning specific aspects of the company that you admire. 2. Highlight your fit for the role by aligning your skills and experience with the job requirements. 3. Showcase the impact of your previous work by providing quantifiable results and achievements. 4. Demonstrate your tech-savviness by discussing your familiarity with relevant tools and technologies. 5. Emphasize your alignment with the company culture by sharing values and experiences that match. 6. Mention your intention to follow up on the application to express continued interest. 7. Conclude with a thoughtful consideration of the role and how you can contribute to the company's success.

Use AI to tell you what the key attributes would look like for the role based on the information about the company; LinkedIn has this built-in if you're finding a role from LinkedIn. From there, craft a cover letter that highlights those factors and your contribution in those cases. Be clear and concise, and offer why you are excited about the role and what you think you can bring to the table.

Startups are fast-paced. They need talent that's willing to move, shake, and make decisions. They need talent that's willing to pitch, wear many hats, and address and handle change in a positive manner. For a start-up I would be enthusiastic, energetic, and focus on ability to pivot and change in an uncertain environment.

Close with call to action: 1. Express your enthusiasm for the role: Show that you've taken the time to research the company and are genuinely interested in the position. 2.End with a call-to-action: Encourage the recruiter to schedule an interview or request more information. Example: "I'm excited about the opportunity to join [Startup Name] and contribute my skills and experience to drive innovation. I'd love to discuss my qualifications further – please feel free to reach out at [Your Email] or [Your Phone Number]."
