Dealing with a disruptive student in class. How can you effectively manage their behavior?

One thing I’ve found helpful is to observe the learner in their environment, and take data on the times and instances that they engage in said problem behavior. Once I’ve identified a function (escape, attention..etc) I would begin to work on reducing the behavior. For instance if the function is escape, I would provide the learner with a chance to take a break. If the function was attention I would give non contingent reinforcement to the learner to curb the disruptive behavior and then slowly thin out my schedule of reinforcement. What I’ve realized is that there are students in the class that have a true deficit, so due to the fact that they do not understand the work or become overwhelmed by it causes the learner to be disruptive.

In my experience, there was a student who frequently disrupted my classes with outbursts and refusal to participate. I decided to have a one-on-one discussion with them to understand what was going on. Through our conversation, I discovered that the student was dealing with significant bullying issues, which were affecting their behavior in school. By acknowledging their struggles and providing a supportive environment, I was able to make necessary adjustments in my teaching methods. I also connected the student with the school counselor for additional support. Over time, the student's behavior improved significantly, and they became more engaged in class activities.

It is important to set clear classroom guidelines to not only build a sense of community, but also to set a safe space within the classroom environment. One way to address a disruptive behavior within your classroom is to understand the root cause of such behavior. Of course addressing the behavior immediately is important as it is causing issues within the class. However, a one-on-one conversation with the student is needed. You may may find that behavior is not directly linked to your class in particular, but to other life factors and/or other situations.

Effectively managing a disruptive student begins with understanding the underlying causes of their behavior. It's essential to consider factors such as emotional distress, environmental influences, unmet needs, or learning difficulties. Engaging with the student in a non-confrontational manner to explore these aspects can provide insights. Implementing strategies like positive reinforcement, setting clear expectations, and providing consistent consequences aligned with educational theories such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs or Glasser's Choice Theory can also be beneficial. Tailoring interventions to address the specific causes can lead to more positive outcomes and a conducive learning environment.

Working in low ICSEA schools it's important to understand that often you are working with students whose lives are episodic and where they are like icebergs, only a small part of all the circumstances that impact a student is evident. Relationships are important, as is the position you use with students- don't use a parent voice, or child voice, but adult voice- be clear and reasonable, explain why and what consequences. These kids are often resourceful in their everyday life, but without skills to maneuver in formal situations, like a school.

For instance, at the beginning of the school year, a teacher might hold a class discussion to collaboratively establish rules such as raising hands to speak, respecting others’ turn to talk, and staying seated during lessons. The teacher could then display these rules on a poster in the classroom as a visual reminder. If a student interrupts the class, the teacher would gently remind them of the rule they’re breaking. Should the behavior persist, the teacher might apply a fair consequence, like loss of a privilege, which was previously agreed upon by the class. This consistent reinforcement helps students understand the importance of their actions and encourages self-discipline, contributing to a harmonious classroom environment.

Recognition is one strong strategy for maintaining order and discipline in school systems. As a teacher purpose to know every learner by name and know something additional.about them. Always call out students by name even if you haven't mastered their name ask them to say their name before they respond to any queries. Say their name after them. Ensure to keep eye contact with learners in every encounter. Set rules will them and explain why it is necessary to have such regulations. Consider involving students in the rule-setting process as well. By giving them a voice and a sense of ownership, you can foster a greater level of buy-in and responsibility for upholding the classroom guidelines. This collaborative approach can be particularly effective in promoting self-regulation and positive behavior.

Don't assume that students know what behavior you are looking for. As you establish expectations, discuss them with students or even have them act them out to ensure everyone in the room has a clear understanding.

One thing I've found helpful in this situation is that firstly the teacher should have some basic idea of students'behaviour one by one, then it's become easier. Through positive reinforcement , students sense the responsibility and improve their behaviour and become more attentive.

Consider a student who often calls out answers without raising their hand, disrupting the class. The teacher decides to implement a positive reinforcement strategy by setting up a reward system. Each time the student raises their hand and waits to be called on, they receive a sticker. Accumulating a certain number of stickers earns them a privilege, such as leading a class activity or extra recess time. This not only motivates the student to follow the classroom protocol but also demonstrates to other students the benefits of adhering to rules. Over time, the disruptive behavior decreases as the student associates raising their hand with positive outcomes, fostering a more orderly and engaging classroom environment.

When you notice the student engaging in appropriate, constructive actions, be specific in your praise. For example, you could say "Thank you for raising your hand and waiting patiently to speak" or "I appreciate you keeping your volume down so everyone can focus." This helps the student clearly understand which behaviors you are rewarding. In addition to verbal praise, consider offering small privileges or tangible rewards for good conduct. This could include things like extra free time, stickers, or small treats. The key is to make the reinforcement meaningful and directly tied to the positive behavior.

Developmentally appropriate natural consequences are crucial in classrooms and schools. They help students understand the direct impact of their actions and teach responsibility, accountability, and problem-solving skills. For instance, if students forget their homework, a natural consequence might be not having the necessary materials for a class activity, reinforcing the importance of preparation without punitive measures. This approach promotes self-regulation and intrinsic motivation, fostering a positive learning environment where students learn from their mistakes and develop a sense of ownership over their behavior.

Imagine a classroom where a student frequently interrupts the lesson by shouting out answers. The teacher has established a clear consequence structure: the first interruption results in a verbal reminder of the rule, the second in a written warning, and the third leads to a five-minute time-out from the class activity. Each time the student disrupts, these steps are followed without exception. As a result, the student begins to understand the direct link between their actions and the consequences. This predictability allows the student to make better behavioral choices and helps maintain a focused and respectful learning environment for all students.

It's important that the consequences are proportionate to the offense. Overly harsh punishments can damage the teacher-student relationship and undermine your credibility, while ineffective consequences fail to provide the necessary boundaries. Strike a balance by ensuring the punishments fit the behaviors.

Take a science class where students are typically disinterested and prone to disruptive chatter. The teacher decides to introduce a hands-on experiment where students can build simple circuits. This practical activity requires collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which keeps students engaged and focused. Additionally, the teacher uses an interactive app that allows students to simulate circuit building on their devices, catering to those who are more technologically inclined. This multifaceted approach not only makes the lesson more interesting but also minimizes opportunities for disruption as students are actively involved in their learning.

Encourage participation and make sure all students feel welcome to contribute. Provide opportunities for students to share their ideas, ask questions, and apply the material in meaningful ways. By giving them a voice and a sense of ownership over their learning, you cultivate a classroom culture where students feel heard and respected.

I once introduced a project-based learning activity where students worked in groups to create presentations on climate action initiatives. By allowing them to choose their topics and present their findings creatively, I saw a marked increase in engagement. Students who typically disrupted the class were now actively participating, sharing ideas, and collaborating with their peers. This inclusive approach not only made the lessons more interesting but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride in their work, significantly reducing instances of disruptive behavior.

Take some time to thoughtfully consider what engagement looks and sounds like in your class. If all students are sitting quietly and appear to be looking at you, are they engaged or just compliant? How do you measure students' engagement? Engagement in your classroom might look and sound different from engagement in the room across the hall. Figure out what works best for you and your teaching style.

Keeping parents informed and involved is also crucial. Open communication with the student's family can lead to a more unified approach, where everyone is working towards the same goals. Parents may be able to offer valuable context or suggest home-based reinforcement methods.

Know who to go to on your campus when there is a problem. If campus admin are all unavailable, who else can help out in the moment? Also, make sure to document behaviors consistently so you can see trends and suggest interventions as needed. Talking to a parent with concrete examples will go further than vague descriptions of past behavior.

Be clear and direct, consistent and boundaried. Students feel safe if they know where they stand. Hold everyone in universal positive regard. Have high expectations and people generally live up to them. Try to remember, they're not giving me a hard time, they're having a hard time. Most of the time, it is not about you.

Communucate small goals. Persist with alternatives. Accept the achievement. Give small reward. Guidance to move forward. Sincerity is paramount.

In my experience, baseline data and empirical measurements should be conducted as part of a needs assessment inventory should take place prior to instruction in order to understand root causes of behaviors. Educators should work in teams with all providers to support students once needs are understood and a plan for support is in place.

I would also add that it's important to build a relationship with the child. Even children who tend to resist authority will lower their guard when they truly believe that you care about them and you have their best interest in mind. However, they're also great at detecting when this concern is not genuine. This does not mean you have to be their best friend or go overly easy on them. In fact, once they trust that you really care about them, you can have very high expectations and show them the tough love that they need.

I have found that there is limited knowledge in regard to neurodivergent sensory and language/auditory processing, which is often the culprit of behavior. Observing the time of day the behavior occurs (i.e., what types of activities was he/she engaged in prior to the behavior, what is going on during the behavior, etc.) may help to lend insight into possible solutions. Have you offered directives in writing, with visual cues, standing next to or (if wanted) touching the student's shoulder? Asking the student to repeat directives/rules back? Behaviors (regardless of the actual 'cause') are often less intrusive when children feel a level of connection with their teacher. Spend time to establish a rapport and to create a safe space.
