You can acquire essential skills of business analysts by leaning the basics. The basics will give you understanding of the elementary ideas. Once you’ have grabbed these elementaries, you will find it easier to navigate business processes and understand mode of function of organizations.  Think of mastering the basics as the solid foundation upon which all your other skills can build. It’s what helps you communicate, meet your deliverables effectively and on time.

The first step is to get a clear understanding on the scope and nature of BA work. The 2 most comprehensive source are the well known international organizations; they make a significant contribution: PMI and IIBA. Search for contents of them!

The task of a BA begins with understanding the requirements of the Client and expected outcome of the analysis. In my experience, I prefer to understand the stakeholders and then requirement gathering. The 3rd concept is very important to be efficient BA - understanding the business process. If you are trying to establish yourself as BA your association with core function is essential.

There are great innovations to support analysis, such as modelling notations (UML, BPMN, BABOK, VDML etc.), modelling tools (Enterprise Architect, ArchiMate, ARIS etc.) Get familiar with them, learn, how to utilize them, what are they for. They give great frames for info gathering, management and visualization, which will drive you to get more and more systematic, transparent and clear-minded.

Analytical skills are vital for a Business Analyst, serving as the cornerstone of effective decision-making and problem-solving. These skills enable the interpretation of complex data, identification of trends and patterns, and the ability to derive meaningful insights. Critical thinking is equally important, as it helps you assess information impartially and make well-informed decisions. Participate in activities that test your reasoning skills and look for chances to analyze real-world business challenges.

You can improve the analytical skills practicing problem-solving in your day to day job. This skill along with data analysis tools like Excel pivot, SQL, and Python will be very valuable. For instance, if you are in a sales excellence role ,you can analyze sales data in Excel to identify seasonal trends and look for spikes and dips. Then you can use SQL to extract and manipulate the data for deeper insights. This way you will learn the practical challenges as well along with the tools. To boost your critical thinking, you can engage in exercises like case studies (case in point was super helpful) and logic puzzles that will challenge your reasoning and decision-making abilities.

Practice makes perfect...or darn close to perfect! Personally, I find that I like to take my weaknesses and evaluate my skills every quarter. For example, last year I wanted to really hone into using Universal Process Notation (UPN) for business process maps. I threw myself into courses, sprints, mentor evaluations for 6 months. As an analyst, you need to ensure that you have these skills. These skills require development and practice. Plug into the ecosystem or platform that you are working with and start practicing. If you like to volunteer, there are many non-profits that will happily use the knowledge of an emerging Business Analyst.

We live in an era, where there is so much knowledge available online, that sometimes it is tough to know where to start within Business Analysis. So here is my short list: 1. Get Platform Specific - Many companies specify the type of Business Analyst they are wanting. I have seen Salesforce, Google, Microsoft, etc. If there is a position you want, get certified on that platform. 2. Get Certified - Salesforce has Trailhead, Google and Microsoft use Coursera. While many of the courses are free, you may have a cost for the certification exam. Get the cert! 3. Be Open - You may find yourself discovering new things that push you towards further advancement or additional platforms. Be open, different doesn't mean problematic!

While becoming a programmer isn't necessary, having a foundational understanding of coding can be highly beneficial. Knowledge of SQL, for instance, empowers you to efficiently query databases and uncover critical insights. To stay ahead, continuously expand your technical skills through online courses, tutorials, and hands-on projects. Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning to keep up with technological advancements. This approach not only enhances your analytical capabilities but also positions you as a versatile and valuable asset in any organization.

Who are you speaking with? The answer is important if we wish to communicate effectively. One thing I have found helpful is to make notes on each stakeholder's preference in terms of communication schedule and platform. I have also found that less is more, especially when dealing with senior managers. They cannot process the details due to their schedules, so keep it high-level. If they want more information, they usually will request a second meeting. Finally, I try to make presentations visually stimulating to increase engagement.

One thing I have found extremely helpful in this area is team sprints and requesting to do the presentations. There is nothing like getting in front of the screen or the audience. The two aspects that I find most important when presenting or public speaking are being prepared and getting feedback. Be Prepared - Running through the presentation twice is the magic number for me. It ensures that I know where my session is going and comfortability with what I want to say. Get Feedback - I also encourage people to practice it. Call your best friend or your mom, someone who is going to encourage you and give you good feedback.

Effective communication is a cornerstone for Business Analysts. You must clearly convey ideas, requirements, and feedback to various stakeholders, including executives, developers, and clients. Hone your skills in both written and verbal communication through practice, seeking feedback, and public speaking opportunities. Strong communication ensures that everyone involved understands the project’s goals and requirements.

Make it sure in every case, that the communication you take part fulfills its mission: exchanges the information between the parties. Keep checking it that your counterpart and you are closing to share the same mind-map on the topic you are communicating of.

As previously mentioned, we live in an era where information is readily available at our fingertips. This is my third master's degree, and I still find YouTube to be the best professor. One piece of advice I'd like to share is to become a great storyteller. Use your data visualizations to tell a compelling story, as this will help people remember your message and allow you to convey it more effectively.

Learning is a never ending process and in order to compete with the present scenario and equip us for the the future we need to keep us updated by learning new things which would help us in the long run, without upskilling it would be hard for us to keep up with the current trend when age old excel is out of the picture now and its just the way to maintain the base data with which business intelligence tools like Power BI, Tableau etc has to be used to bring out the data analytics and data visualization to the another level, certifications on Business intelligence tools, Power Apps, Power Automate, AI etc has to looked upon regularly to keep us in the sync.

In my experience as a business analyst, constant communication with stakeholders is paramount. Continuous learning is also important as trends evolve quickly within the BA profession. You never know when that skill will be useful.

In my experience, ability to adapt to changes is crucial for business analysts. Being flexible, open-minded, and quick to adjust strategies enables analysts to respond effectively to evolving stakeholder needs, changing project requirements, and unexpected challenges, ensuring the success of their analysis efforts. Adaptability also improves stakeholder satisfaction, as analyst who can pivot quickly are seen as more reliable and responsive. Moreover, adaptability contributes to a more resilient and agile organizational culture, driving innovation and continuous improvement across all business functions.
