One way I've found to be effective is establishing a rapport with him or her. By doing this will allow some comfortability when approaching uncomfortable topics. Express how you feel regarding their treatment of you and ask them on their expectations of you and voice your own expectations of them. Once the two of you are able to have a transparent conversation it will allow room for positive correction. If he/she is a true leader, they will value your approach and feedback as well as begin to implement and apply some of the concerns right away. Remember to lead with an open mind and respect from both parties involved.

Your boss is human. In hierarchy terms, they are at the top of a management structure. But this doesn't mean they don't feel the pain and pleasure of a work environment like other people do. They want and deserve recognition for their work as much as any other colleague. They should be empathised with like any other interaction you have. They will make mistakes like the rest of us.
