Here's how you can cultivate open communication in times of change as a team leader.

As a team leader, transparency is crucial during times of change. Aim to openly share all relevant information about the ongoing changes, their reasons, and their impacts on the team. This helps build trust, respects your team members as essential stakeholders, and reduces fear of the unknown. Enhance transparency by sharing personal experiences, providing regular updates, and encouraging open dialogue to ensure everyone feels informed and supported.

We often do well in communicating to our subordinates and teams. Often we fail to reach a full expectation because we don’t do well with the communication with those we report to. To have complete transparency, communication should flow throughout all levels within a company and we should not wait for the upper management to deliver the company direction, but we must be a part in steering the company direction. Providing upward feedback provides areas where the company can target as well as ensuring that everyone is aligned.

The importance of change management is often underestimated/underappreciated. It gets an "after the fact" treatment (i.e. "tick the box"). Also sometimes gets misunderstood to just mean training users in a given new technology/application. Change management fundamentally requires proactively & transparently engaging the impacted people. Leadership, at all levels, must clearly communicate the key "why(s)" for a change, "what" the change would look like, and "how" the change would make a difference. Provide a "safe forum" for listening to people's concerns & questions, and respectfully provide honest answers. Never mislead. Provide multiple opportunities for stakeholders to be listened & responded to. Ensure adequate "human touch".

Be transparent about what you don't know or can't yet share. Sometimes leaders avoid meeting with their team because they have nothing to share. Simply bringing people together and acknowledging that you understand there might be questions or anxiety and committing to communicating when you can go a long way in building trust with your team.

In any Change Management Process, I have found out that effective and efficient Communication is quite useful. Feedback brings you into the loop of being a Change Team Lead and those who are being encouraged to do best practice processes for effective and efficient outcome. I used a model of V V P(Vocal, Virtual, Practical) to deliver effective and efficient feedback. The first V stands for Vocal where you feedback by talking through the issues and that may bring innovative solution. The second V stands for Virtual where you create virtual scene that communicate the issues of concern effectively and the third is Practical by making the change agents to do and work the talk, for all these could bring about a Bespoke solutions.

Actively listening and acknowledging their contributions not only helps identify issues early but also makes them feel valued.
