While your interests are important, be realistic about your strengths and training as well. A teacher may be an effective administrator, but not necessarily. Similarly, a talent for advising may successfully transition to the classroom, but not necessarily. An alignment of both your passion and natural talents will lead to an educational role that results in student success while providing a meaningful career for you.

At 42 years old, I pivoted from the end of a partnership in the credit risk management business to enter into my passion of being an educator. I took a year off to take a MBA in order to establish myself as a candidate for entering into higher education sector. It is important that one needs to gain higher academic qualifications if you wish to take an academic route. In addition, it's absolutely necessary to gain confidence in teaching by getting as much teaching experience as possible, be it training assignments or simply a speaking engagement. These will at a minimum prepare you to be able to teach in front of a group of people.

The millennials have always been dumped with very frequent upgrades/changes. Some how the gen has adapted itself to change but upskilling to reap benefits is slowing down. People think we are able to use some things at its minimum function/output that is sufficient. But to stay put and grow in respective areas, one need to upgrade themselves through continuous learning, applying, unlearn and relearn cycles. for this to happen one needs to be open at thoughts and heart.

If you really want to enter into higher education, one way is to be open to whatever job scope that comes with the opportunity. Although, I applied for a teaching role, my successful offer in higher education is not teaching but was in student recruitment and marketing, as I do not have much academic teaching experience, I decided to take up the offer of a student recruitment role, just to get myself into the education sector. Subsequently, I requested to move to being a lecturer in the same institution I joined.
